    “ Maybe
we can make it happen, ” Luke said. “ Not tonight,
but soon. It would be fun to play all the small places in town. Imagine all the
people taking videos and uploading them online. ”
    “ Is
everything online anymore? ” Mack asked.
The rest of the band laughed.
Trent gripped Mack ’ s shoulder. “ Welcome to the present, Mack.
Everything is online. I don ’ t
think we could go into any other town and get away with taking a piss without
someone posting about it. ”
    “ Man,
I don ’ t know how much I
like that, ” Mack said.
    Trent laughed again and finished
off his beer.
It felt good to laugh and drink.
All his worries started to shake off his shoulders.
    “ I ’ m dry, ” Trent said. “ I ’ ll be back. What else do we
need? ”
    “ Just
order another round, ” Mack
said. “ They have a tab
running. ”
    “ I
hate to see that total, ” Jake said.
    “ Not
me, ” Trent said. “ Mack ’ s buying, remember? ”
Jake smiled. “ Then order up two more rounds. ”
Trent went to the bar and waited.
He looked up at the televisions and saw there were soccer and baseball games on.
He never really took much interest in sports, because his early teenage life
always revolved around music. Funny how that one person who inspired him to
write a song was the same person that could possibly ruin his dream.
    “ Hey,
you ’ re Trent, right? ”
Trent turned his head and saw a
rough looking man staring at him. Then there were three sets of eyes on him.
Just looking at the small group made Trent feel uneasy.
    “ I ’ m Trent, ” Trent said. “ How ’ s it going? ”
    “ Ordering
some drinks? ”
    “ Yeah.
Me and the band are taking a night off. ”
The guy laughed. “ Hey, you going to drive around
again? ”
    “ What ’ s that? ” Trent asked.
    “ You
heard me. You going to get drunk and then drive around again? Put people in
danger? ”
    “ Whoa,
buddy, ” Trent said, “ you ’ ve got your facts all mixed up. I don ’ t know what you read …”
    “ I
know what I heard, ” the guy
said. The tension started to grow. “ You
think because you ’ re some
rockstar you can just break the law? Pay lawyers to bend the rules? ”
“ No, ” Trent said. “ Not at all. ”
Trent faced the bar again, but he
could feel all their eyes still on him. The bartender finally got to him. She
was a pretty young woman and her eyes lit up each time one of the guys talked
to her. Trent hurried to order another round and then walked away from the bar.
Nobody said anything to him but he knew they were still looking.
When Trent sat down, he rubbed his
face and shook his head.
    “ What ’ s wrong? ” Luke asked.
“ Nothing, ” Trent said. “ Just a couple guys at the bar
giving me shit. ”
    “ Who? ” Mack asked.
    “ Calm
down, ” Trent said. “ They ’ re drunk. They wanted to know if I was going to
drink and drive. ”
    “ Damn, ” Gray said.
“ Let ’ s go tell them to shut their
mouths, ” Mack said.
    “ Okay,
muscles, ” Luke said. “ Relax. ”
“ It ’ s good, ” Trent said. “ Don ’ t worry about it. Just pisses me
off more that people don ’ t
understand the truth. They just run with whatever they read or hear. ”
    “ Welcome
to being famous I guess, ” Luke said.
When the next round of drinks came,
Mack was quick to change the somber mood. He raised his shot glass and smiled.
    “ Come
on, brothers, ” Mack said. “ Let ’ s do this right. This is for what we ’ re going to do. The fate
waiting. The hope in our hearts. The wild road out there calling us. ”
    “ And
the fans, ” Trent said.
    “ The
damn fans, ” Mack said. “ I love them all. ”
They took their shot and chased it
with a beer. Trent felt a little better but his mind kept slipping back to
something else. He still had no idea why Chloe had come to town or what her
purpose was. Did she need money? Was she in trouble? As much bad blood that
existed between he, Chloe, and Jake,
