make.’

Thankful that the lift back to her room was empty, Sally hammered Carol’s number into her mobile phone.
‘Hey Sal, how’s it going?’ Carol’s cheery greeting died on her lips as she listened to her friends barrage of incoherent sentences as she offloaded the confusion of the last twelve hours; ending with the discovery that Graham was retiring, and that David had made her feel a total fool.
‘Hang on, Sally, pause for breath, girl.’ Carol struggled to make sense of everything she’d heard, ‘let me see if I’ve got this right. 1. You’ve had sex involving ice cubes in a cupboard with Cameron James. 2. You think he only did it to show you your place in the new order of things at Zelcon. 3. This new order of things being that Graham is retiring. 4. You got all that from a conversation with David, whoever he is?’
Sagging onto the armchair in the corner of her bedroom, kicking off her shoes, Sally said, ‘That’s about it. And there have been more notes as well.’
    ‘More?’
‘I’ve had two pushed under the door now,’ Sally glanced towards the bedroom door she’d just stormed through, spotting another folded piece of paper, ‘Better make that three.’
‘Will you bloody well calm down and tell me what on earth is going on up there? How many men have you got on the go in that hotel, you lucky cow?’
Picking up the latest note, Sally began to explain who David was to her friend. Silently listened before responding, Carol said, ‘And you say Cameron can’t stand him?’
‘Apparently not, but he hasn’t said why.’
‘Maybe he just thinks he’s a creep?’
‘Could be. To be honest, I’m beginning to think he isn’t quite all he seems, but I’m pretty sure he’s behind the notes.’ Sally read out the third one.
    Sally
You smell amazing. You are amazing.
    PS. Don’t trust him.
‘Well David got that last bit right! I wouldn’t trust Cameron James as far as I could spit.’
Carol’s forceful tut would have caught the attention of even the most distracted toddler, ‘Are you really that daft, Sally?’
    ‘Don’t you start.’
‘Sorry, sweetie, but think about it. Are these notes signed?’
    ‘Well, no.’
‘So, don’t you think it’s far more likely that Cameron sent them?’
‘That’s ridiculous. I told you, he doesn’t even like me!’
Virtually growling with frustration at her friend’s inability to believe that anyone could possibly think her pretty, Carol spoke clearly and steadily. ‘Am I really going to have to drive up to Oxford to make you see the obvious? If Cameron was using you last night he would have fucked you and walked. But if you are describing things correctly, then it doesn’t sound like that was the case at all. I think it left you wanting more. Both of you. Am I right? Did you want more? Don’t you think he could be your bit of rough in disguise? How do you feel when you think about him now – honestly?’
Sally closed her eyes, fiddling with the new note between her fingers, thinking about how her body had reacted when Carol or David had mentioned Cameron’s name, and how she hadn’t dared look at Cameron. That hadn’t been just because she was embarrassed, but because she was afraid he’d see how much she craved him written all over her face. ‘Yes, I guess I did want more. The thought of what happened makes me hot. But that doesn’t mean I like him, just that I like what he can do to me.’
‘Finally!’ Carol sounded triumphant, ‘So the person not to trust has to be David. Cameron must have a good reason. Whether you like him or not, he isn’t stupid.’
‘Maybe.’ Sally felt tired and unbelievably stupid. Why am I always such a disaster with men?
Carol went on, ‘and how the hell would David know how your chest looks, or how you smell?’
‘Well, you see, the water soaked my dress, and it appeared a bit like I’d won a wet T-shirt competition, and I suppose ...’ Sally trailed off, leaving her sentence
