flannel pajama pants and a loose tee shirt with a pirate skull on it.
“Gee, if only I had a closet full of comfortable clothes I could just change into. I feel way overdressed now,” Spencer teased just as the show came on and they plopped down on the bed together.
Kim gave him a couple of sideways glances before daring to speak, thinking of whether she should say what had come to mind. “Well, you’re welcome to take your shirt off,” she told him casually. He looked at her as if gauging if she was serious or not before tugging his shirt off. He was kind of pale like her, and he had some well-defined muscles; particularly his pecks. He looked like he still had some working out to do, but he was still pleasing to the eyes. He kicked off his shoes as well, letting them fall to the floor with a loud thunk before scooting back onto the bed.
Kim slowly leaned herself against him, hoping he wouldn’t push her away. She felt super vulnerable and needed more comforting than she was ready to admit for the time being. Instead of pushing her off or questioning her, he moved his arm around her so that her head to rest against his chest. His heart beat was a little erratic, probably due to her proximity, but his breathing was even and calming for her. She hoped it was a start of something she could hold onto this time.
Chapter 8
Kim was startled awake by a buzzing feeling against her leg. She looked around feeling disoriented as the events of the night came back to her. The television was still on, and she had fallen asleep next to Spencer in her bed. She smiled down at him and how peaceful she was as she tugged at her phone which had become lodged under her knee. It had been the source of the buzzing noise, and it showed that she had a text message. She looked at the time, and it was after one in the morning. Who would be texting her at that time of night?
Curious and worried that it might be her grandfather for some reason, she pulled up the message only to find out that it was from a number that she did not recognize. No record of it existed in her phone. It took her several times of reading the message over for her to understand what was going on.
Kim, I do not know if you know the man you are spending all your time with. He could be more dangerous than he looks, and you need to understand why. Meet me at The Shadows’ meeting place as soon as you can.
Kim wasn’t sure who it could be or what they could mean, but something was telling her gut she needed to go find out. She glanced nervously at the sleeping Spencer and worried what he would think if he woke up to find her gone, so she decided to leave him a note. She gave no details only that she had to go somewhere and would be back. Not wanting to waste any time or wake him up by getting dressed, Kim left the room quietly and tiptoed to the door, grabbing a jacket off the dining room chair to slip on, on her way to the garage.
The old clunker that she dreaded driving was sitting there with the keys in the ignition. It wasn’t like anyone wanted to steal such a piece of crap. Kim climbed inside and flinched at the awful noise it made as it started and the grinding of the garage door as it came open. She hoped that Spencer was as heavy of a sleeper still as he had been as a kid or she would never find out who had sent her the message or what they wanted to tell her. And she had a sinking feeling that Spencer wouldn’t approve at all of what she was doing.
Luckily, she made it out without incident. It wasn’t a long drive to the bar where all of the MC’s activities were held, and she was surprised to see it abandoned beyond one lonely motorcycle. As she stepped out of the car, she felt a chill that didn’t go alone with the way the weather was at the moment. She clearly hadn’t thought things through. What if it was a trick and she was going to get hurt? After all, her father had been killed because of something the MC did.
But as she stepped through the back
