gave Eddie the chance to close the gap and theyrounded the bend shoulder to shoulder.
âNow letâs see how you like it!â cried Eddie.
The two boys pounded along the back straight, cheered on by the spectators, who assumed it was all part of the entertainment.
âThat idiotâs really askinâ for it!â Adam muttered. âBlackbeard will go berserk later, when his folks have gone home.â
âDonât suppose Eddie even thought about that,â said Gareth. âHe just wants to get his own back.â
âHe might do as well â YTâs already run one lap.â
With about 200 metres to go, Eddie accelerated into the bend, hoping his fresher legs would drive him into the clear. He was running as fast as he could, hampered slightly by his tracksuit, but he wasnât able to shake off his rival. Young Taffy was still only just behind him as they entered the home straight.
âHeâs gonna do it!â screamed Gareth, dancing up and down.
Adam wasnât so sure. âI wouldnât bet on itâ¦â he began and then gasped in astonishment as Young Taffy suddenly seemed to find an extra gear to surge ahead, making it almost look as if Eddie were going backwards.
As the winner sprinted over the finishing line, arms aloft in triumph, Eddie sagged to his knees, crushed with disappointment.
Adam and Gareth ran across the track to pull him back onto his feet and lead him away.
âWhat got into you?â Adam demanded. âThat was a crazy thing to do!â
âMore like what theyâve got into
him
!â Eddie stormed. âYou saw what he just did. Thatâs not normal. He must be on drugs!â
âCool it, Wonder Boy!â Adam warned. âHere come your folks. Donât go rantinâ on to them about drugs and stuff. Theyâll take you home.â
Gareth and Adam moved off as Eddieâs family made a fuss of him.
âWhat do you think heâll tell them?â said Gareth.
âNot much,â Adam grunted. âNot if heâs got any sense, he wonât.â
âWell Iâm going to tell Gramps about whatâs going on here. We need somebody on our side â yâknow, just in case.â
âIn case of what?â
âI donât know,â Gareth said with a shrug. âThatâs what bothers me.â
Chapter Nine
Out of Bounds
âHi, Foxy!â cried Jacko, as the three boys emerged from the trees. âWasnât sure if youâd be able to make it.â
Adam had snatched a word with Jacko after the race and arranged to meet up at the old boathouse during their free Sunday evening, after all the families had left. Gareth and Eddie had come with him.
âYou know me, man,â Adam laughed. âBut how did
you
get here?â
âA chain is only as strong as its weakest link,â Jacko said with a sly wink.
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â asked Gareth.
âIt means thereâs a small hole in the fence.â
âYou on your own?â demanded Eddie. âOr is that freak with you?â
Jackoâs grin faded. âIf you mean YT, heâs at the Centre, celebrating his victory.â
âWonder Boy here reckons YT must be takinâ drugs, the way he stormed through to win like he did,â Adam said.
Jacko gave a casual shrug. âWeâve all had a little extra help.â
âWhat do you mean by that?â asked Gareth.
âArtificial help,â Jacko admitted. âJust like you lot.â
âWeâre not taking anything,â Eddie denied hotly.
âOh, yes, you are,â Jacko told him. âItâs not just fruit in all that juice they make you drink. It contains special vitamins, too. Yâknow, stimulants, like.â
Eddie was not surprised by that revelation. âI wondered why they keep trying to force it down us. Tastes awful. I pour it away, if I can.â
