voice wailed. âIâm not beautiful at all. Look at me!â
Something flew out of the flower, zoomed toward Bella, and landed on her nose. Bella squinted to see what was there.
It was a tiny ladybug! She had a tiny frown on her face.
âWhy didnât you listen to me?â the ladybug whispered. âWhy couldnât you leave me in there?â
âIâm really sorry.â Bellaâs ears flopped down over her face, the way they always did when she felt upset. âI ⦠I thought it was the flower talking.â
âBut flowers donât talk!â the ladybug exclaimed.
âI know, butâ¦â Now Bella frowned. âWhat were you doing hiding inside a bluebell bud?â she asked.
The ladybug looked sad. âI was hiding from Insect Sports Day.â
âWhat? But why?â Bella asked. âSports Day is fun. Iâm going to see it with my friend Carla.â
The ladybug flew down from Bellaâs nose and landed on top of the bluebell in front of her.
âHow can I go when I look like this?â
Bella stared at the ladybug. âWhatâs wrong?â she asked. âYou look all right to me.â
The ladybug sighed. âHow many spots can you see?â
Bella peered closely. The little insect was as red and shiny as a juicy apple. Right in the middle of her back was a single black spot.
âOh!â Bella said. âYou have only one spot.â
The ladybugâs eyes filled with tears. âExactly! How can I go to Sports Day with just one spot? Iâll look stupid!â
âItâs a nice spot,â Bella said.
The ladybug shook her head. âProper ladybugs have lots of spots. Iâm the only ladybug I know with just one. My family knows Iâm different. They love me all the same. I donât even mind when my friends call me One-Spot. Butââthe ladybug stopped to catch her breathââif I go to Sports Day, all the insects in Misty Wood will see me, and theyâll laugh.â The ladybugâs lip trembled. Her eyes were bright with tears.
âDonât be sad,â Bella said.
âHow can I not be sad?â the ladybug replied.
Bellaâs violet eyes lit up. âI know! Iâll help you find some more spots.â
The ladybug looked confused. âHow will you do that?â
âHmm. Let me think.â Bella crouched down and leaned her head to one side to help her brain work better. She wiggled her noseâsometimes that helped her think. Suddenly, her whiskers twitched, and she hopped in the air.
âWe need a song! I never do anything without a song.â
Bella hopped and skipped around the little insect. Then she started to sing, thumping her paws on the ground to keep the rhythm.
This ladybug needs some spots.
Hoppity, hoppity, hop!
Weâre going to find lots and lots.
Hoppity, hoppity, hop!
Hopping here and hopping there,
Hopping, bopping everywhere!
Sheâll be happy when sheâs got
LOTS AND LOTS OF SPOTS!
âHow was that?â Bella asked, giving an extra-bouncy hop as she finished singing. But there was no reply.
The ladybug had vanished!

CHAPTER THREE
Wanted: Spots!
âDonât worry, Iâm up here!â a little voice cried from high in the air.
Bella peered into the sky.
The ladybug zoomed down past her nose. âWheeee!â she squealed, whizzing up again and making a big circle in the air.
âWow! Loop-the-loops!â Bella cried, sitting up on her hind legs to watch as the tiny insect whizzed around again.
âI always do loops when Iâm happy,â said the ladybug, swooping down to rest on a bluebell stem. âIâm so excited youâre going to help me. Thank you!â
âYouâre welcome. Iâm excited, too! By the way, my name is Bella.â
âIâm Lexi!â said the ladybug.
âItâs lovely to meet you, Lexi. Right. Letâs get started,â
