could try falling on an adversary!â
âIneffective unless you want to gain three hundred pounds,â he returned. He grinned. âAlthough, you could certainly experiment on me, if you want to. It might immobilize me. We wonât know until we try it. Want me to lie down and let you practice?â he added with twinkling eyes.
She laughed, but nervously. âI donât think Iâm ready to try that right away.â
âSuit yourself. No hurry. Weâve got plenty of time.â
She remembered Jess and the drug lord and her eyes grew worried. âIs it really dangerous for us at homeâ¦?â
He held up a cautioning hand. âStevie, how about a soft drink?â
âThat would be great!â
âThere are some cans of soda in the fridge in the kitchen. How about bringing one for me and your aunt as well?â
âSure thing!â
Stevie took off like a bullet.
âYes, itâs dangerous,â Eb said quietly. âYou arenât to go alone, anywhere, at night. Iâll always have a man watching the house, but if you have to go to a meeting or some such thing, let me know and Iâll go with you.â
âWonât that cramp your social life?â she asked without quite meeting his eyes.
âI donât have a social life,â he said with a faint smile. âNot of the sort youâre talking about.â
âOh.â
His face tautened. âNeither do you, if I can believe Jess.â
She shifted on the mat. âI havenât really had much time for men.â
âYou donât have to spare my feelings,â he told her quietly. âI know Iâve caused you some sleepless nights. But youâve waited too long to deal with it. The longer you wait, the harder itâs going to be to form a relationship with a man.â
âI have Jess and Stevie to think about.â
âThatâs an excuse. And not a very good one.â
She felt uncomfortable with her memories. She wrapped her arms around her chest and looked at him with shattered dreams in her eyes.
He took a sharp breath. âIt will never be like that again,â he said curtly. âI promise you it wonât.â
She averted her eyes to the mat. âDo you think Jess and Dallas have done each other in by now?â she asked, trying to change the subject.
He moved closer, watching her stiffen, watching her draw away from him mentally. His big, lean hands caught her shoulders and he made her look at him.
âYouâre older now,â he said, his voice steady and low. âYou should know more about men than you did, even if youâve had to learn it through books and television. I was fiercely aroused that day, it had been a long, dry spell, and you were seventeen years old. Get the picture?â
For the first time, she did. Her eyes searched his, warily, and nodded.
His hands contracted on her soft arms. âYou might try it again,â he said softly.
âTry what?â
âWhat you did that afternoon,â he murmured, smiling tenderly. âWearing sexy clothes and perfume and making a beeline for me. Anything could happen.â
Her eyes were sadder than she realized as she met his even gaze. âIâm not the same person I was then,â she told him. âBut you still are.â
The light seemed to go out of him. His pale eyes narrowed, fastened to hers. âNo,â he said after a minute.âIâve changed, too. I lost my taste for commando work a long time ago. I teach tactics now. Thatâs all I do.â
âYouâre not a family man,â she replied bravely.
Something changed in his face, in his eyes, as he studied her. âIâve thought about that a lot recently,â he contradicted. âAbout a home and children. I might have to give up some of the contract work I do, once the kids came along. I wonât allow my children anywhere near weapons. But I can always
