around the room. “It looks nice. Thanks.”
They strolled along the sidewalk. Everyone they met stopped them to ask him about his receptionist and about how he was managing.
Each time, Rand introduced Marian and explained, “This is Marian Gaenor, a friend of Chelsea’s. She was a big help this morning.” The locals looked her up and down and thanked her for being willing to work on her vacation.
“I love it. It’s different from being in New York. You have beautiful country and nice people here in Montana,” Marian said.
Finally they got to the diner and were seated. Rand stretched.
“You still have patients to see this afternoon?”
“Yes. Two at the hospital. Then I’m going to check on Mr. Nettles. Maybe you’d like to ride along?”
“Absolutely. I find this all very exciting and interesting.”
“After New York, Frontier City is exciting?”
“I live a dull life. I go to work and back home to a small apartment. Especially dull since my best friend married and left me alone.”
Rand shook his head. “You’re a strange lady, Marian.”
“My mother said that all the time I was growing up. ‘You are strange, my darling girl.’”
She made him laugh, and his shoulders relaxed. She picked up her menu. The scent of food floating in the air made her hungry.
They ordered hamburgers. The waitress brought them and hot fries to the table. She topped off their cola and went to serve another customer.
Marian bit into the hamburger. “Ah, if I die now, I don’t care. This is heaven.”
“I gather you don’t eat many of these.”
“Nope. Too much fat for my arteries and more importantly for my hips.”
“I don’t remember a problem with your hips.” Rand grinned and deliberately looked under the table at her hips. When he looked up, her breath caught. Desire had made his eyes look like molten silver.
“I want to make love to you,” he said in a soft voice. “And I will, today or tomorrow or the next. But sooner or later, I’m going to have you. And it won’t be on the rebound.”
Her heart thumped in her chest, and her lower abdomen tightened. He’d picked up his hamburger and taken a bite. No one looking at them would ever guess what he’d said.
After a couple more bites and a long drink of soda, he smiled at her. “When’s it going to be?”
Marian hesitated. She so wanted to say yes, and yet her rational mind scowled at her. No, no, no. It’s too soon. I’ll go home with a broken heart. But he’s so nice and so delectable. His sexy smile melted what little resistance she had. It had been a long dry spell since anyone affected her like Rand did. She didn’t think her body had responded this much to any other man. It was worth the gamble. She took a deep breath and jumped off the deep end.
“Would I be considered fast if I invited you to my place tonight?”
A slow smile spread across his face. “I’d think you were being cruel if you made me wait any longer.”
    “I’m never cruel.”
He paid the bill. “We’ll drive to the hospital, then see the Nettles, and lastly check out your cabin.” Rand opened the door and put his hand at the small of her back during the walk to his car.
Frontier Hospital sat on the outskirts of the small town. “We get patients from all over the county,” Rand explained when Marian was surprised at the size and newness. “They built this about five years ago and have already added an extra wing.”
She stood beside the nurses’ station while he checked his two patients. The nurses gave her the once-over.
“Are you his fiancée?” one of them asked.
“No. I’m Chelsea Brodie’s friend. I just offered to help in the office today.”
Rand walked up behind the nurse. “I heard your question. To clue in the curious, I’m no longer engaged. I know this will heat up the gossip lines for days to come.”
“We don’t gossip. We’re just interested in the welfare of our residents,” the nurse protested and smiled.
    “Whatever
