warehouse. Thatâs where the candy smells are coming from. We could smell candy, but we couldnât see it.â
âYou mean the inspector?â Violet asked. âWhy would he be here?â
âOh, I suppose thatâs not so strange,â Jessie said. âHe probably has to make sure the candy doesnât get spoiled or anything before it gets shipped.â
âThen why did they meet in back?â Henry pointed out. âAll the shipments are in front on the loading dock and in the truck.â
âFrom what Benny and Soo Lee saw, it sounds as if Mr. Boxer is making candy,â Violet said. âHe could be trying to get the school candy business for himself.â
âYou know what else?â Jessie asked. âI think Mr. Boxer planted his own spy at Mrs. Winklesâs factory â either Meg or Tom. After all, Meg used to work for him. As for Tom, well, even Mrs. Winkles said he practically dropped out of the sky. Letâs tell the two of them that we saw Mr. Boxerâs place and see what they have to say.â
âOr not say,â Henry added.
CHAPTER 9
Something Sweet, Something Fishy
T he children had a lot to talk about. As they crossed the parking lot to return to the loft, the inspectorâs car passed by and drove away.
âI guess heâs all done here,â Henry said. âIâd sure like to know why he stopped by. Look, Mr. Boxer is leaving, too.â
The Aldens waved at Mr. Boxer when his van went by, but he didnât wave back.
âWhat are you smiling about, Jessie?â Violet asked when she noticed a grin on her sisterâs face, âMr. Boxer didnât look very friendly just now.â
Jessie went on grinning. âI left my sweater in the warehouse.â
Now the other children looked just as confused as Violet.
âThatâs nothing to smile about,â Henry said.
âYes, it is,â Jessie replied. âI left it behind on purpose. Now that Mr. Boxer is gone, we have an excuse to go back inside to get it. Only letâs go the back way where Benny and Soo Lee were.â
âGood plan, Jessie,â Henry said. âWhat are we waiting for?â
Jessie quickly ran ahead to find her sweater. When she came out, the other Aldens were waiting in front of a small building. It looked a lot newer than the rest of the warehouse.
The children breathed in the sweet, sugary air.
âSomebody was definitely cooking candy or something sweet in there,â Violet said.
Benny and Soo Lee crept up to the building first. A window was opened slightly, but they werenât tall enough to see in.
Henry was. âHey, guys. Take a look inside!â
Violet and Jessie stood behind Henry. He picked up Benny, and Jessie picked up Soo Lee. Now the two younger Aldens could see a gleaming candy kitchen. It was newer and smaller than Mrs. Winklesâs kitchen, but equipped with the same kinds of pots and candy molds.
âSo Mr. Boxer is a candy maker, not just a shipper,â Jessie said. âNow thatâs pretty fishy. I donât think Mrs. Winkles knows about this. She might not want to use a shipper whoâs competing with her.â
Violet looked worried. âIf Mr. Boxer is making candy, too, that would explain why heâs not careful about Mrs. Winklesâs candy. Maybe we should come back with Mrs. Winkles when Mr. Boxer doesnât expect us. That way she can see for herself what is going on.â
âGood idea,â Henry agreed. âMaybe weâll catch him in the act.â
âLetâs bring Tom and Meg, too,â Jessie suggested. âWe need to find out once and for all if theyâve been making trouble â and candy â with Mr. Boxer.â
The children headed to the loading dock.
âHi,â Jessie said to the two workmen. âWould you give Mr. Boxer a message that weâll be back in a couple of days?â
âOkay,â one of the men
