part
initially, it was all gone. Disappearing with the night itself; leaving her
open and vulnerable to this one man.
    When
they reached her bedroom, Lucie expected him to put her on her feet, but
instead, Kane lowered her to the bed, coming down on top of her as he did. The
blessed weight of his much larger frame against hers crushed her, but it wasn’t
suffocating her. No, it was the complete opposite. He was grounding her,
ensuring she knew exactly where she was and what she was doing.
    “Look
at me, Lucie.” Kane’s raspy voice was thick with the same hunger that pulsed
through her veins, and Lucie opened her eyes, struck by the deep gray of his
eyes swirling with more emotion than just uncomplicated lust.
    When
Kane pushed himself up with one arm, Lucie watched as the impressive muscles
flexed and bunched, his chest hardening even more so than before as he held
himself above her.
    “Touch
me, Lucie,” he urged and Lucie tore her gaze from the strength she’d been
admiring to look into his eyes.
    What
she saw there stole her breath because even though this could’ve been only sex
between them, she felt as though it were something more. So much more.
    Sure,
they had a child together, but this wasn’t about Haley, this was about the two
of them. In this moment, together, exploring one another as though this were
the very first time. And for him, maybe it was the first time, but for her... No,
she remembered the time before and that night paled in comparison to this. That
night, although she didn’t regret one minute, hadn’t been laced with this feeling
that they were meant to be together.
    “I
need to be inside of you, Lucie.” She heard the urgency in his tone, and her
body mirrored the need she could hear in his voice.
    Spreading
her legs with his knees, Kane eased down closer to her, situating himself
between her thighs, but then he moved, glancing around the room as though
looking for something.
    “What’s
wrong?” she asked.
    “Condom.”
    Why
the idea hadn’t even crossed her mind, she didn’t know. They didn’t need a
condom as far as pregnancy went. Not this time. And no, it wasn’t because of
the fact that they had a child already. It had been stupid on her part to have not
used protection the first time they were together, but Lucie had been so
overwhelmed that night, so torn up with the emotions that had blinded her, she
hadn’t even thought about it.
    “I’m
on the pill,” she told him, her eyes meeting his and an unspoken agreement
settling between them. “I’ve been tested, and I’m clean.”
    After
that one night, the night Haley had been conceived, Lucie hadn’t been with
another man, and yes, she had immediately gone to the doctor to get tested for
sexually transmitted diseases because of her own stupidity. And she had
routinely been tested after that for a full year. Why she hadn’t taken a
pregnancy test at that point, she still didn’t know.
    “I’ve
never...” Kane let the words hang between them, and Lucie suspected he knew
what he was about to say was a lie.
    He
had. They had had unprotected sex that one night so long ago so what he was
about to say wasn’t true. She couldn’t help but wonder whether it had happened
to him on more than one occasion. She didn’t want to think about it...
    “Except
with you, Lucie.” Kane leaned in closer, his mouth brushing hers. “I’ve never
had sex without a condom. I swear to you.”
    She
believed him, although she wasn’t certain that she should. If anything, Lucie
knew Kane would never hurt her intentionally. Even though she had kept Haley’s
paternity a secret from him, it hadn’t been because she feared what he would
do. She hadn’t wanted to trap him and each night when she put her precious
little girl to sleep for the last five years, Lucie had prayed Kane would
remember, and she would’ve been relieved of the horrible secret she’d held
inside of her.
    “I
know,” she whispered as she pressed farther into him,
