it?â
âSometimes itâs caused by a virus,â Erin said, âand you did say that youâd felt a bit fluey, so it mightâve been that. But sometimes thereâs no reason for itâit just happens.â
âWill she get better?â James asked. âItâs notâwell...?â
âThe good news is that itâs not fatal,â Erin reassured him, guessing what he was worrying about. âAnd the even better news is that we can treat the condition. Iâll give you a five-day course of steroids, Judy, and that will reduce the inflammation and stop the pain.â
âSteroids? Arenât they the things you hear about sportspeople taking when they cheat?â Judy asked.
âNoâthose are anabolic steroids, which are a totally different type,â Erin explained. âThe steroids Iâll prescribe are the sort that occur naturally in the body and help to beat inflammationâactually, theyâre the same kind that people take for treating asthma. Theyâll reduce the pain and swelling, and if they donât help enough we can look at a couple of other treatments as well.â
âHow long will it take her to get better?â James asked.
âIt does take time and you need to be patient,â Erin warned. âUsually you start recovering in a couple of months.â
âMonths?â Judy looked horrified. âBut we were going on a swimming holiday in Greece in four weeksâ time.â
âIâm sorryâyouâre not going to be well enough for that,â Erin said gently. âIt might be a couple of months before youâre back on your feet, and then we find that between three and six months after the episode youâll recover more rapidly. And I do need to warn you that it can take up to a couple of years to make a full recovery.â
âA couple of years?â James blew out a breath, looking shocked. âOK. Could Judy get it again?â
âUsually TM is a one-time thing,â Erin said. âAbout a third of patients make a really good recovery, and a third find they have a slight permanent disability.â
âWhich means a third donât recover at all?â Judy asked. âDo you know which one Iâll be?â
Erin squeezed her hand. âIâll be honest with youâright now, itâs too early for us to tell how youâll respond to the treatment. But, as I said, we can start with steroids, we have some other treatments that we can try and weâll get you some physiotherapy with a specialist in neurological cases. The exercises will help you get back on your feet and improve your condition, and itâs important that you keep doing themâbut you will find that you get tired a bit more easily than usual, so youâll need to build up to things.â
âI canât get my head round this,â Judy said. âSo if this thingâs caused by a virus, does that mean James could get it as well?â
âNo. TM isnât infectious and itâs not hereditary,â Erin said. âI can put you in touch with the local support group, so you can talk to other patients whoâve had the condition. They can help reassure you that this isnât going to be the end of the world.â
âIt feels like it,â Judy said. âRight now, I canât walk. We canât go on holiday next monthâand we were going to start trying for a baby after the holiday. We canât do that now, either, can we?â
âItâs not ruled out for ever,â Erin said, âbut, yes, you will need to put that on hold for now.â
A tear trickled down Judyâs cheek. âI feel so useless.â
âYouâre not useless,â James said immediately. âItâs not your fault youâre ill.â
âItâs nothing that you did wrong,â Erin reassured her. âBut try not to worry. My best friendâs mum always
