and threw herself in front of the couple.
Stan and Dr. Louboutin barreled toward their target. Matt’s hands rocketed into the air above him as he backed away from Vicky. The women closed ranks in front of him.
    “What the hell?” Stormy said.
“I see goodness in him,” Vicky said. “He hasn’t turned.”
“My love, stop this please,” Dr. Louboutin said.
“This again?” Matt asked. “Come on, have I tried to eat any of you?”
Stan stepped into Stormy’s space. “Move.”
Stormy got right in his face. “Back the fuck up.”
When he didn’t move, she wound her fingers around her gun. Stan stepped backward, but refused to break eye contact. Smart man.
“I’ll kill him myself if he turns,” Vicky said.
“Don’t make promises you won’t keep, my love. God can hear you.”
“God hears you too when you plot the deaths of others.”
“He already turned,” Dr. Louboutin said. “Alive people don’t look like that, dear. You know this.”
“He’s not like the others,” Vicky said. “Listen to him. He talks.”
“He could start chewing on you at any moment. It’s a liability having him around. You take your patients too seriously.”
“Maybe you don’t take your patients seriously enough. He saved us and would do it again, even though you keep trying to cut off his head.”
“They are no longer my patients once they expire.”
Stan nudged Dr. Louboutin. “Our chance will come. This ain’t it, Doc.”
“Vicky, please get away from him,” Dr. Louboutin said. “Do it for me, dear.”
“You back up first. I cannot trust you right now.”
“I just hope that when he snaps, he eats you and not me,” Stan said.
Matt folded his arms and spoke slowly through clenched teeth. “Can you please stop talking about me like I’m not here?”
“Make the call,” Stormy said. “Either we are getting out of here as a group or we part ways now. It’s up to you, Doc.”
Dr. Louboutin backed away. Vicky mouthed, “thank you.”
“Good call, Doc,” Stormy said. “If you’re done with this nonsense, I’d like to plan our next move. I’m ready to get the hell out of here. I think we all are.”
She looked back at Matt. He gave her one of his penetrating looks, the kind he used to chase with a wink or a soft kiss. He mouthed the words, I love you, and a cavern broke open inside her chest. She looked away because it hurt too much to see him like this.
“I don’t think we should look for survivors anymore,” Vicky said. “It’s getting too dangerous out there.”
“You should’ve set the fire farther back,” Stan said.
“It would’ve found its way to us, no matter where I set it,” Dr. Louboutin said.
“That fire is telling us it’s time to go,” Vicky said. “We need to evacuate.”
“I agree,” Stormy said.” There’s a woman in the stairwell, but she’s probably dead already.”
“We can’t take any more chances,” Stan said.
“Everyone find weapons, and then we’ll regroup and get out of here,” Stormy said.
    Stan rolled his eyes. “Okay.”
Stormy smiled at him. “Relax. I’ll show you how to get down the tower.”

    CHAPTER SEVEN
DAYS UNTIL THE SUPERVIRUS GOES GLOBAL: 30:21:25

With only minutes left, Stormy’s attention centered on her boyfriend. He didn’t need to breathe anymore, but he sighed over and over again. He refused to lift up his shirt to show her the damage. She was curious at first, but now she was a little scared. When he turned, a concave section that wasn’t supposed to dip in would catch her attention. After he caught her gaping at his picked clean torso, he covered it with one hand.
Stan rolled his eyes at both of them and moved farther away. When everyone filed into the hallway, Matt didn’t move. Stormy went back for him and her entire being begged the doctor to have a problem with it. No sooner had she neared him, then Matt’s arms closed around her and pulled her to his
