Kristy!â Karen cried when Mrs. Thomas dropped Kristy off at Watsonâs.
âHi!â added Andrew happily. Andrew is three.
Andrew and Karen like Kristy so much that not long ago, Kristy promised them sheâd be their main baby-sitter at Watsonâs until she becomes their stepsister.
Watson walked into the front hall. âWell, Kristy,â he said warmly, âIâm so glad you could come.â (Kristy knew that Watson was really just glad she wasnât such a pill about him and her mother anymore.) âI donât think youâll have any trouble tonight.â
Kristy smiled at Watson as Boo-Boo wandered into the hall. âI know one way to avoid trouble,â she said. âWeâll keep Boo-Boo inside.â She turned to Karen and grinned at her, but Karen just stared back solemnly. Uh-oh, thought Kristy. Somethingâs wrong.
âAll right,â said Watson, âthe emergency numbers are in the usual place, and the phone number of Karenâs school plus her classroom number are taped to the phone, just in case.â Kristy nodded. âSeven-thirty is bedtime for Andrew,â Watson went on, âand eight oâclock for Karen. By the way, thereâs peppermint-stick ice cream in the freezer and ⦠I donât believe Andrew and Karen have had dessert yet.â
âYay! Ice cream!â cried Andrew, jumping up and down. Karen continued to look solemn.
Kristy began to feel suspiciousâand a little nervous.
Watson shrugged into his coat. âGood-bye, pumpkin,â he said, kissing the top of Karenâs head. âGood-bye, Andy.â
He left quickly, calling over his shoulder, âIâll be home before nine, Kristy. Thanks again.â
Kristy glanced warily at Andrew and Karen. This was the moment when even the most baby-sat-for children sometimes burst into tears. Jamie Newton, for instance, absolutely hated for his parents to leave him just before bedtime. But Andrew was already on his way into the kitchen after the ice cream. Karen, apparently, had other things on her mind.
âWhatâs the matter?â Kristy finally asked her, taking her hand. She really didnât want to know, yet it was her job to know.
âMorbidda Destiny,â whispered Karen.
âWhat about her?â Kristy whispered back, a little shivery tickle running up her spine. She remembered how strange Mary Anne said Boo-Boo had acted the day she was baby-sitting, when Mrs. Porter had chased him out of her garden with a rake.
âKristy? Ice cream?â called Andrew from the kitchen.
âJust a sec, Andrew.â
âMore spells,â whispered Karen urgently.
âReally?â asked Kristy, trying to sound unconcerned. âBoo-Boo looks all right.â
âNot Boo-Boo. Me,â said Karen. She closed her eyes dramatically.
âYou!â exclaimed Kristy. âWhatâs she done to you?â
âGiven me freckles.â
âKaren,â said Kristy, hiding a smile, âyou already had freckles. Youâve had freckles since you were two years old. Iâve seen pictures.â
âSheâs given me more.â
âSometimes they spread.â
Karen shook her head.
âKristy!â called Andrew, sounding impatient.
âComing! Karen, I really donât think you need to worry. Letâs go have some ice cream with Andrew, okay?â
âOkay ⦠but Iâm warning you. If she squintsher eyes and holds one hand in the air, sheâs putting a spell on you.â
âIâll be on the alert,â Kristy said.
They walked into the kitchenâand found pink ice cream dripping all over the table and onto the floor. Three bowls and three spoons were sitting stickily in the middle of the mess.
âAndrew!â cried Kristy.
âI helped,â he said proudly. âI let Boo-Boo out, too.â
Kristy turned pale. âYouâyou let
Boo-Boo
out? Andrew,
