but she had to say something.
âSo, you just want sort of a cheat sheet from me?â Sam thought she did a good job of asking the question pleasantly.
âIâm not sure what that is,â Ryan said, âbut Iâm certainly not requesting something unsavory.â
Yeah, you are, Sam thought.
âAfter all, weâre friends,â he added.
Ryan wasnât trying to buy a shortcut with money, like his father did, but couldnât he hear himself trying to buy it with friendship?
Sam knew she wouldnât have pointed that out, even if she hadnât suddenly remembered Jen. She should have called Jen hours ago.
âActually, I was calling to tell you I think youâre on the right track with the places youâre looking and to offer to let Brynna know your plan, to save you a phone call.â
You wimp , Sam told herself, but after Ryan accepted her offer and she hung up the phone, Sam decided sheâd been nice to him for Jen.
She would have told Jen that, but her best friendcalled first, sounding gloomy and critical.
âThanks for calling like you promised,â Jen said right away.
âItâs not like I forgot,â Sam protested. âI was waiting until I finished my homework, sort of like looking forward to dessert,â Sam teased.
Jen didnât laugh. She zoomed straight to what she wanted to know.
âSo, did you and Ryan have fun?â
âNot really,â Sam answered.
âDid you plan how to catch Hotspot?â Jen asked.
âNo more than we did at your house,â Sam said. âI wonât take him to any secret places and heâs already got the others on his map.â
What could she say to make Jen laugh? Samâs mind raced. She considered telling Jen about her daydream, that Jen would marry Ryan and get Gold Dust Ranch back, but Jen didnât sound like she was in the mood for far-fetched fantasy.
âWhat arenât you telling me?â Jen demanded.
âNothing,â Sam said and then, because that wasnât exactly true and Jen had already picked up on her hesitation, Sam amended, âSomething stupid.â
âAbout Ryan?â
âWell, sort of,â Sam said. Then, just when she was about to change the subject and tell Jen about Pam, she hesitated again. Of course Jen heard something in her delay that made her think something major was going on.
âLook, Sam, heâs trying to be a good guy.â
âI knowââ
âJust give him a chance, okay?â
Jen wasnât being fair, but she was probably miserable. Sam wouldnât trade places with her for anything. She tried really hard to be understanding.
âI wasnât going to say anything bad, Jen,â she told her friend, but Jen didnât seem to hear.
âThink of that first day we met him,â Jen said. âRemember? When the cougar was eating his dadâs buffet? Ryan was so cute. He wouldnât let anyone hurt the cat. And donât forget he tamed Roman. Anyone else looking at that horse would only see its bad conformationââ
âJenââ
âPlus, he didnât abandon me after Sky went psycho in that raceâ¦.â
Sam blinked. How could Jen think that counted in Ryanâs favor? It was what any friendâno, what any decent human âwould do!
âAnd when I was in the hospital, he brought me roses.â
Sam stared at the kitchen ceiling and counted to ten. By the time she finished, it sounded as if Jen had finally run down.
âI know he did. He was great while you were in the hospital,â Sam said. âHeâs not a bad guy, and I think heâs reallyâ¦grown up while heâs been here.â
Sam thought sheâd chosen her words well, because Jen was quiet, as if she didnât hear anything to contradict.
âSorry I went off on you,â Jen said, finally. âItâs not like youâre going to steal my boyfriend. In the
