up thinking about my situation. I had to find out who was
behind that shit with Ace, and eliminate them.

“Let me get two wings, one breast, some
bombers, and two rolls,” I said to the speaker at the Church’s Chicken
Drive-Thru. I figured I’d stop through the ‘hood to see what I could see. I
felt refreshed when I woke up, so I was out and about.
    “What kind of drink
would you like, sir?” the woman asked.
    “Strawberry pop,” I
said.
    “Pull to the window for
your total,” she replied.
    I pulled to the window
and got my free meal and went to my little homie’s house on 26 th and
Denver. He said he heard some niggas that Ace shot at a month ago did it. I
left after that. He didn’t sound too convinced, and neither was I.
    While I was pushing
down Van Brunt, my phone rang several times. I ignored the calls. It was Tamika
and I didn’t feel like talking to her. Then OG Casa called to give his
condolences, said if he heard anything he’d let me know.
    I shot out to Duece’s
to see what was up with him. I didn’t call to let him know I was on my way. I
pulled up at his house and hopped out my truck. I heard him yelling when I
approached his door.
    “I already told you …
Fuck that! … look, Sonya … A’ight, whatever man, call me later,” he said.
I knocked on the door a
few seconds later. He opened the door looking surprised.
    “Spade, what’s good?”
He embraced me.
    I walked in and spotted
some powder on a tray, sitting on his living room table. This nigga trippin’ ,
I thought. “What’s good, my nigga?” I said.
    He quickly grabbed the
cocaine off the table and took it back to his room. He came back in, rubbing
his nose, and sat down. I sat down too.
    “So you fuckin’ wit’
that shit, I see.”
    “I ain’t gon’ stunt.”
He gave me a weak smile. “Every now and then. That shit wit’ Ace got me on
edge.”
    “Man, that shit for
street punks,” I said, and he frowned at me. “It’ll have you all off schedule,
my nigga. I been there, done that.”
    “Cuzz, I really don’t
need you tellin’ me what the fuck to do,” he said in a calm but serious tone.
    “You my nigga and I
love you. I’ma always keep it a hunid wit’ you.”
    “I’m coo’, cuzz.”
I talked to him for a
minute longer, just to see where his head was at. He seemed like he was hiding
something but I didn’t want to assume. I didn’t mention the argument he had
with my bitch on the phone. I told him to be easy with that coke and I left.
    I got a text from
Ashley and she told me they were letting Ace leave the hospital in a couple of
hours. She was taking him to his auntie’s. Her text was followed by Maria’s
text—the move went smooth. Tamika kept calling my phone also. I really didn’t
dig young females because they were too clingy. And seeing how Tamika kept
calling made me regret fucking her. I called her back to stop the excessive
calling.
    “You don’t know how to
pick up yo phone?”
    “I’m busy, what’s
good?”
“I need to talk to you.
Can you come over?”
    “In a couple days. It’s
a lot goin’ on right now,” I said.
    “Whatever. I just
wanted you to know I’m pregnant, Spade.”
    “Congratulations.”
She was insulted. “By you !”
    “Quit playin’ wit’ me,
man.”
    “I’m serious, Spade.
It’s yours, daddy.”
    “I’ma hit right back,”
I said. And I hung up.

I pulled up to Ace’s auntie’s house to
pick him up. I told him he could stay with me. His room was already furnished.
And I was barely there anyway, so he would get all the privacy he needed. I
figured I’d get him out of his auntie’s so he wouldn’t draw any heat there.
    He was on the porch
smoking a blunt. When he saw me pull up, he got his crutches and stood up. It
fucked me up to see my little nigga like that. But I knew he was strong. He had
the heart of a lion.
    Ashley came out with a
few suitcases and sat them on the porch. I got out of my truck and went up
