of his chest and stared at her as if he were examining her.
BJ gave Monte a shove as he turned toward Susanna.
He reached for her hand and she stared up at him.
“I’m fine, Sheriff. There’s no need to have wasted the time to stop by.”
He raised his eyebrows at her.
“Wasted my time? Honey, you’re important to me, and I stopped in to see that you’re healing well because I care. I was there last night. I saw how they attacked you.”
He brought her hand to his lips and kissed her knuckles.
“Now tell me how you’re feeling? Ribs still really sore?”
She lowered her head and took a deep breath. She seemed distant and hesitant.
“I suppose they will be for at least another week.”
“Perhaps longer,” Monte chimed in.
He joined them now and she took a step to the left.
“Listen, I appreciate you taking the time to check on me. Just as I appreciate Monte for driving me home. The others will be home soon, too. I’m tired and want to rest. It’s late.”
BJ placed his hands on her hips as he stepped closer to her. He towered over Susanna, especially as she stood in front of him wearing only ankle socks. She remained standing there with her hands at her sides as he used his thumbs to gently caress her hips.
“What’s going on? Are you worried about the fire marshal coming by the club tonight?”
“What? He came by the club tonight? When? What happened?” she asked, pulling away from him and walking with her hand against her ribs on one side while she grabbed her cell phone from her purse.
She pulled it out.
“Hey, it was fine. It worked out all right. Paula took care of it,” he told her, and she froze as she stared at him.
“Paula took care of it? The two of them talked?”
“Sure did. Why do you sound concerned?” Monte asked her.
“Listen, it’s my place, my responsibility. I should have been there. I never leave early and the one night I do, this happens.” She ran her fingers through her hair. She looked at her cell phone. It appeared as if she were about to call or text someone.
BJ covered the phone and her hand.
“Sweetie, it’s after one in the morning. They got it covered and they want you to rest just like Monte and I do. Let’s go sit down in the living room.”
She stared at him and appeared as if she were about to give him a piece of her mind. Instead, she held the phone to her chest and slowly walked into the living room, passing Monte on the way.
She settled down on the couch slowly, and BJ took a seat next to her.
“Put your legs up and rest.”
Monte fixed the pillows, and she got comfortable after struggling with the rib pain.

Monte moved a chair closer to the couch.
“We stopped by Dixie Chix today to talk with your staff,” Monte stated as BJ caressed Susanna’s ankle.
“I heard.” She stared at him.
“As your place becomes more popular, you’re going to need better security and more of it.”
She took a deep breath and nodded her head.
“We weren’t there being nosey, Susanna. We wanted to help you and your friends.” BJ caressed her thigh. He was drawing circles on her skin and making his way higher and higher. She closed her eyes then opened them again as she locked gazes with BJ.
“We worry about you,” he whispered, and his brother leaned forward from the chair to touch her cheek so she would look at him.
“We think about you all the time.”
BJ crept his fingers higher up her thigh as Monte leaned his lips closer to hers. BJ reached the hem of her shorts then moved under the fabric.
She shifted her leg just as she spoke to Monte.
“That’s real neighborly of you.”
Monte slipped his hand behind her head then leaned closer to her lips. “Being neighborly ain’t half of it.” He covered her mouth with his own as BJ shifted then pressed his fingers against her panties.
Susanna parted her thighs as BJ maneuvered between them. He massaged her inner thighs and caressed her legs up and down, and with every
