Fox!â
âYou mean heâs got an A?â I ask.
âIâm as amazed as you are, Ross. Heâs got everything right except for the challenge question. If heâd got that one he wouldâve got an A plus.â
Now Iâm glad I mucked up the cheating. An A plus wouldâve looked way too suspicious.
âLetâs see if miracles happen in pairs, shall we?â Mr Relf takes out the test with my name on it.
âLeave mine till later, sir,â I say. âI donât want you working too hard.â
He holds up his hand, signalling for us to wait.
âErrrr,â he says, putting a cross beside question one. âErrrrrr.â He crosses question two.
A minute later he looks up. âFunny, but I thought if one of you were to spring a surprise itâd be you, Ross. But I guess I was wrong.â He holds up my mark: D minus.
âHeâll just have to study as hard as me next time, wonât he, sir?â says Gavin.
I throw Gavin a dirty look but he doesnât seem to notice; heâs high as a kite when we get outside.
âDid you see that? I got an A!â
âNo, I got an A. You got a D minus.â
He ignores me. âIâm gonna be rich!â
I start to wonder if Iâve done the right thing, but then Cathy skips up. I squeeze Gavinâs bicep. âRemember,â I say.
âHey, Gavin. Hey, nosy,â she says.
âHey.â
âAshleigh really needs to know right now if you like her,â she says to Gavin.
Gavin looks into Cathyâs eyes. âTell her I was just trying to make someone jealous. Someone I really like.â
âWho is it?â asks Cathy.
âAre you sure you wanna know?â
She nods.
He takes her hand and writes âMEâ on the back of her wrist.
Cathy looks at it, confused. âYou really like ⦠yourself?â Then she starts blushing. âOh, I get it. I really like me, I mean, you, too. Oh, Iâm so embarrassed!â
She runs off.
âHey!â I yell.
Cathy turns around.
âTell Ashleigh that the other guy is still available. And that he likes her heaps. Heâll be at the handball court if she wants to talk to him.â
She gives me a smile. âSheâll be there. I promise.â

Pretty soon Iâll be going out with the coolest girl in school. All the suffering â the D minus, being called nosy â is going to be worth it. And thereâs one person I want to tell. The one person who beats me at everything, and always rubs it in.
Kane.
Heâs in the King square, as usual, and Iâm the Queen. Weâre not playing chess, though. Weâre playing a much harder game: handball.
âGuess what?â I say to Kane. âIâve got a girlfriend.â
He smacks a backhander. âWhenâs she gettinâ outta jail?â
I see Cathy and my new girlfriend walking towards me. Well, she will be my new girlfriend. I just need to make it official.
âSheâs coming my way right now,â I say. âTry not to get jealous.â
He takes a look. âSavage?â
âNo. Ashleigh.â
âYouâre going out with Ashleigh Simpkin?â
âYep.â
âShe likes you ?â
âYeah.â
âGeez. Sheâs not half bad.â
This is the moment Iâve been waiting for my whole life. The moment when Kane Steele finally realises Iâm as good as him, maybe even better.
âYou sure?â he asks.
âSure as I am that the angles of a triangle add up to 180 degrees.â
âGee. Youâve changed.â He looks at me and, for the first time ever, I see respect.
âHey, Tony. Hey, Kane,â says Cathy.
Notice how she didnât call me nosy? That has to be a good sign.
âAshleighâs got something to tell you, donât you?â Cathy gives Ashleigh a nudge.
Ashleigh brushes her beautiful brown hair out of her eyes and gives us a nervous
