dragon.â
âThe dragon did flips in the air,â said Maggot as he rose to a wobbly stand. âCan we do it again, dragon? Can we? Can we?â
âYou mean you liked it?â exclaimed Wiglaf.
âYeah,â said Maggot. âIt was awesome.â
âEnough!â said Mordred. âBack to business.â
âBack to business!â Bilge mimicked.
âButton it up!â Mordred boomed.
âButton it up!â taunted the twins.
The twins burst out laughing.
Mordred glared at the pair. He turned to the dragons. âWhat about my second wheelbarrow of gold?â
âHere you go,â said Ethelred. She poured her bag of gold into the empty wheelbarrow.
Mordred sank his arms into the huge pile of gold coins and hugged them tightly. âMy gold,â he crooned. âAll mine.â
âOnly,â said Lucinda, âif you keep Bilge and Maggot away from our cave.â
âDonât worry about them,â said Mordred. âMy school is known for turning worthless lads into fine young dragon slaâI mean, fine young men. Bilge and Maggot wonât be bothering you again. Iâll whip them into shape in no time.â
âWanna bet?â said Angus softly.
âFarewell, Wiglaf,â said Lucinda. âFarewell, Angus. I wish you could visit us again. But Iâm going to booby-trap the path up to our cave.â She shrugged. âSorry, but no one without wings will ever pop in on us unexpectedly again.â
âThanks for the cookies,â said Angus.
âWe want another ride, dragon!â demanded Bilge.
âYeah!â said Maggot. âGive us another crazy ride!â
But the dragon twins ignored them. They spread their wings and flew off toward their cave on Keep Away Mountain.
âWell!â Mordred rubbed his hands together. âLetâs get my loot back to DSA. Nephew? You push that wheelbarrow. Wiglaf? You push this one. Nice and smooth now. Canât have coins dropping out. Hmm. I wonder if Iâm going to need a bigger safe.â
Angus and Wiglaf grabbed the wheelbarrow handles. By gritting their teeth and pushing with all their might, they made the wheels turn. They pushed the giant wheelbarrows down Huntsmanâs Path.
âBilge?â called Mordred. âMaggot? You walk behind. Pick up any spillage. I have my eye on you. If I see you slipping coins into your pockets, Iâll turn you upside down and shake them out.â
The twins skipped along behind the huge wheelbarrows.
âWe must get back to DSA before dawn,â said Mordred, bringing up the rear. âWonât do to have students and teachers waking up and seeing all this gold.â He cupped his hands to his mouth and called, âPut on a little speed, nephew! You too, Wiglaf. Pick up the pace.â
It wasnât easy to push the wobbly, fully loaded wheelbarrows at any speed. But Wiglaf and Angus did their best to go faster.
The sky was pink with dawn when Wiglaf spotted DSA in the distance.
Not far from the drawbridge, Angus stopped. âI...canât...push...more,â he panted.
Wiglaf stopped, too. He had never been so tired.
âWeâll help you!â called Bilge. He grabbed the handles of the wheelbarrow Angus had been pushing.
âYeah,â said Maggot, grabbing the handles of Wiglafâs barrow. âWeâll help!â
Angus and Wiglaf dropped onto the grass, exhausted.
The little lads shoved hard and managed to get the wheels rolling. Bilge pushed his wheelbarrow up onto the drawbridge. Maggot was right behind.
âThey are strong for such little lads,â said Wiglaf, watching them.
âCareful now, lads,â Mordred called, hurrying toward the drawbridge. âKeep âem steady. Donât want any coins spilling into the moat.â
Hearing this, the twins looked at each other and grinned. Then they started wobbling the wheelbarrows from side to side on the
