has done to her hair Iâll be back. Although Sheri said this was a job for a magician not a beautician so it may take a while.â
âAnd who says you arenât a magician?â Esther Mae called out from her chair in the center of the room.
âYeah,â added Norma Sue with a snort. âAnybody who saw Esther Maeâs red triple decker before you got a hold of her would know youâve got some great tricks up those sleeves of yours.â
Esther Mae harrumphed and Norma Sue gave her an innocent look. âHey, Iâm still waiting for it to go poof and turn back into the pumpkin that it was.â
Lacy laughed and climbed down off the ladder. Spinning around toward the two older friends, she plopped her hands on her hips. âYou two better straighten up and be nice to each other or I might just have to get my razor hold of yâall.â
âHey,â Esther Mae snapped, her eyes growing wide. âHow do you think I would look with one of thosespunky short cuts? You know where my hair sticks up on top of my headââ
âLacy,â Norma Sue broke in. âDonât listen to her. Mule Hollow doesnât need to give the wrong impression.â
âAnd just what does that mean?â Esther Mae gasped indignantly.
Norma Sue dropped her jaw. âYouâd look like a redheaded troll! Thatâs what.â
Esther Mae blew out a short breath. âPooh. I would be spunky and cute. Just like my personality.â
Lacy shot a wink Mollyâs way. âYou are right about the personality, Esther dear. But I think maybe weâd have to have a serious consult before I punked out your hair. Okay, I gotta go.â
Molly watched Lacy jog toward the door, chuckling.
âWhat do I need to do?â she called after her, not at all sure about attempting decorating without a whole lot of instruction.
âOh!â Lacy spun at the door. âAs Esther Mae and Norma Sue get those decorations done, all you have to do is string them like I did these.â She pointed to the ceiling where sheâd been draping the lights and ribbons Norma Sue and Esther Mae were braiding together. âDonât look so doubtful, Molly. You can do this. The ties are on top of the ladder. As soon as I can, Iâll be back. If Iâm not back before you get finished, youâll know either Iâve got a really, really bad disaster on my hands or Iâm getting to tell whomever is over there waiting on me about the Lord!â
She grinned, her eyes sparking with excitement. Everyone knew that witnessing for the Lord was thereason Lacy woke up every day. Molly had experienced it firsthand in the middle of a highlight.
Taking in Lacyâs beautiful work, Molly realized there was no way her streamers were going to remotely resemble the artfully draping decorations her friend had strung. Every dip was perfectly matched, no bulges, no kinks. Molly plastered on a smile and thought positive. âSure, I can handle this, Lacy. You go do that thing you do.â
âCatch ya later,â Lacy sang. ââBye, Norma Sue and Esther Mae. Try to be good, why donât ya.â
âHey, what fun would that be?â Norma Sue laughed, studying her work. âDonât you agree, Molly?â
âOh yeah. Sure thing.â She raised an eyebrow at the two spicy women. Picking up a strand Lacy had already strung across the floor, she climbed the ladder, listening to the two friends chatter on, returning to their previous banter without skipping a beat.
âWhat would possess you to think about cutting your hair like that?â Norma Sue asked.
Esther Mae gave an exasperated sigh. âI feel fat. I thought maybe a shorter cut might help.â
âEsther, it doesnât work that way!â
âWell, something has to give. I tell you I canât fit into my dress,â she wailed. âThe weddingâs two weeks away and Iâm as bloated as
