“So you’re Fae?”
“Yes.  I’m a member of the Spring tribe.”
                “Do you have powers?”
“A few.  I am a guardian. A warrior.  My powers are strongest during the spring season.”
                “What can you do?”
                “It’s difficult to explain.”
                “So Jariah…he’s Shadow Fae?”
                “Yes.”
                “He called you brother.”
“I told you, not everyone will welcome a Halfling to the throne.” We drove in silence the rest of the way home.
All too soon we were pulling into my driveway.  Cerus cut the engine and turned to me expectantly.  I’m not sure what he wanted me to say.  I couldn’t leave my life behind.  Nancy parted the living room curtains and looked at the unfamiliar car parked in her driveway.  I unbuckled my seat belt and reached for the door handle.
“Alexa you need to understand.  The Shadow will stop at nothing to destroy you.  To them you are an abomination.” Cerus said, grabbing my arm.
“I can’t leave.  I have family here.  Friends.  I don’t know anything about being Fae.  I know all about being human.  This is where I belong.  I’m sorry Cerus, but I’m not going with you.”
                “It’s not safe here.”
                “I understand that.”
“I don’t think you do” he said reaching out to caress my face.
“Well you’re a guardian.  Why don’t you stay here.  With me.” We sat in silence for a while, each regarding the other.  Cerus leaned forward and I met him in the middle, our lips meeting for another searing kiss.
“Just as you cannot leave with me, I cannot stay with you.” Cerus whispered.
My heart broke with that one statement.  “I understand,” and with that I fled his car, running through the door and up to my room before Cerus or Nancy could see the tears streaming down my face.

Chapter 4
Suddenly Popular

Sleep was impossible.  I couldn’t settle my mind or body.  All I kept thinking about was Cerus, Jariah, and the Fae.  If my life was in danger that meant that so was the life of my parents and Sam.  Were something to happened to them because of me I don’t know if I would be able to forgive myself.  The sun was just starting to lighten the sky when I finally fell asleep.  A few short hours later and my alarm was blaring, signifying another school day.  Thoughts of my family bloodied and broken kept ricocheting through my mind.  I really had only one way to save them.  There were only 11 weeks of school left.  After graduation I would join the Fae.
Decision made I rushed through my morning routine, out the door, and sped to school.  My plan had only one problem.  I didn’t know when or if I would see Cerus again.  The way we left things yesterday felt like finality, a goodbye that I wasn’t prepared to face.  I barely knew him, yet I was so drawn to him that I felt emptiness without him.  So today I had two goals; first, make it through the school day and second, find a way to contact the Fae.
Sam was waiting for me by my locker, but he wasn’t alone.  I had hoped to have a few minutes alone with him to share what Cerus had told me yesterday.  So I was less than enthused to see Bethany Scott and a boy I had seen around the halls, but didn’t really know waiting with him.  My steps slowed and with hesitation I approached.
                “Hey Sam” I greeted them.
“Hey Lex.  You know Bethany.  This is her cousin Adam” Sam made the awkward introductions.  From the look on his face I could tell that this was
