walked back to the kitchen.
Welch put on his clothes, then came out. There was a lung , a woven bamboo steamer basket, on the table next to a shallow dish of soy sauce and chopsticks.
âYou remembered that I like those,â Welch said as he sat down. He lifted the lid off the basket, and a cloud of pungent steam filled the air. âHmm.â
âYes, I remember.â
He lifted his chopsticks and picked up a dumpling, dipped it into the soy sauce, and then took a large bite. âThatâs . . . remarkable.â
âMr. Tsai at the market makes a mean pork dumpling.â
Welch laughed. He always laughed whenever Mei Li used an American idiom.
âDid I say that right? âMean,â it means âFei chang hau,â like âvery good.ââ
âYes,â he said, still smiling. âYou used it perfectly.â
âIt is very strange that Americans sometimes say the opposite of what they mean.â
Welch smiled. âYes, they do. Often. Was the market busy?â
âThe market is always busy in the morning. It is our way. We do not like the big supermarkets like in America.â
âDid you see anything suspicious in town?â
âIf you mean foreigners, no. Just some students.â
âHow about police?â
âYou think the Taiwanese police will be hunting you?â
âI know they will be. And your military. The Elgen have arrangements with both.â
âAre you sure?â
âVery. I helped make them. Hatch will tell them that Iâm one of the terrorists involved with shutting down the Starxource plant. Iâm certain that a picture of my face has already been circulated.â
Mei Li frowned. âI saw nothing unusual.â
âIs there an Internet café nearby?â
âI have Internet in my home.â
âNo, I donât want them to track us here.â
âThere is an Internet café at the end of the street near the phone store.â
âGood. I can kill two birds with one stone.â
She looked at him quizzically. âWhy do you want to kill birds?â
âItâs an American saying,â he said. âIt means I can do two things at once.â
âMultitask,â she said.
Welch laughed again. âWhere did you learn that?â
âAmerican television channel. Thatâs where I learn most of my English slang words.â
Welch fumbled with his chopsticks and dropped one of the dumplings into the dish of soy sauce, spattering the brown liquid all over himself. Mei Li stifled a laugh. âAmericans have more trouble with chopsticks than the Chinese language.â
âWe have trouble with both,â Welch said.
She walked to his side. âI have a question. How are you to get out of Taiwan? If Hatch has reported you as a terrorist, you will not be able to use your passport or you will be caught.â
âIâm thinking I could charter a small plane or even a boat. Itâs only six hundred nautical miles to the Philippines.â
âI could find you a boat,â Mei Li said. âBut then what will you do?â
âI need to get back to America.â He rubbed his chin. âIâm going to need inside help for that.â
âWho will help you? Who can you trust besides me?â
âThere is no one besides you. I donât know anyone who isnât Elgen or who the Elgen know about.â He paused, then said, âExcept Michael Vey.â
âWho is Michael Vey?â
âHeâs a Glow.â
âWhat is a glow?â
Her question reminded Welch of how little Mei Li actually knew about his world or the Elgen. âMichael Vey is part of a group who is fighting the Elgen.â
âYou mean the terrorists who attacked the Starxource plant in Zuoying?â
âYes.â
âThey are bad people. You should not be with them. It is very dangerous.â
âThey werenât trying to shut down the plant.
