threw him a teasing look over her
shoulder. “Don’t you get any crazy ideas about moving in with me. I’ve never
done well with roommates.”
“That’s too bad,” he drawled, making her
shiver as he kissed her shoulder. “I’d make a damn good roommate. I’d always
pay my half of the rent, I’d keep the place pretty clean, and I wouldn’t play
loud music at all hours of the night while you’re trying to study.”
“Mmm. Sounds too good to be true. Would you
also do backrubs?”
“Sweetheart,” he murmured in her ear, “I’d do anything you wanted me to.”
Rebecca’s toes curled. He was so damn sexy
she almost asked him to move in with her right then and there. But she couldn’t
even imagine coming home every day to a man like Vince Gray. With him around,
she wouldn’t get a single thing done. She’d spend too much time on her back, or
on her knees.
“Where do you live, Vince?” she asked
curiously.
He kissed the nape of her neck. “If I told
you I was homeless, would you let me move in with you?”
She laughed. “No, I’d refer you to a friend
of mine who’s a social worker for the city. She’d help you find a job and
obtain subsidized housing.”
    “Hmm. Nice friends you have.”
“I like to think so. So what about you, Vince?
Do you have a lot of nice friends?”
“Why? Are you tired of me already?”
    As
if!
“Do you always answer questions with
questions?” she teased.
“Is that what I was doing?”
“Yes,” she said with a muffled laugh. “And
you just did it again!”
He chuckled. “Sorry. It’s your fault,
though.”
    “ My fault?”
“Yeah. I can’t think straight while holding
the most beautiful woman I’ve ever met in my arms.”
If any other man had spoken those words to
her, Rebecca probably would have rolled her eyes in scoffing disbelief. But Vince…well,
Vince was somehow different. So when he called her the most beautiful woman
he’d ever met, she didn’t mock his sincerity. She melted.
“I’ve rendered you speechless,” Vince said
softly.
Rebecca smiled. “Maybe a little. It’s
becoming a rather bad habit of yours.”
He laughed quietly. “Well, speaking of
habits,” he murmured, snuggling closer, “I could get very used to this.”
“I was just thinking the same thing,” Rebecca
admitted, surprising herself.
Vince Gray was a virtual stranger to her, yet
she could think of no place else she’d rather be than lying in his arms, their
bodies spooned together like two halves of a whole.
Who is this man? she silently marveled. And where had he come from?
The doorbell rang, jerking her out of her
thoughts.
“That’s the deliveryman,” Vince said, rolling
away from her and swinging his long legs over the side of the bed. “I ordered
Chinese for dinner.”
Rebecca warmed with pleasure as she turned
around to face him. “You thought of dinner?”
“Of course. We worked up one hell of an
appetite, don’t you think?”
She smiled demurely. “You could say that.”
“Besides, I have to feed you.”
    “Oh, really? Why’s that?”
He leaned down to nibble her bottom lip.
“Because I haven’t had my fill of you,” he said huskily, gazing into her eyes.
“And by the time this night is over, beautiful one, you’re gonna need all the
strength you can get.”
    Oh,
God .
If Rebecca had been standing, her knees would
have given out on her. All she could do was lie there and watch as Vince winked
at her, then rose from the bed and sauntered out of the room.
It was only when the fragrant aroma of Chinese
food reached her nostrils that she finally climbed out of bed and padded to the
adjoining bathroom. After emptying her bladder, she rummaged around in a
cardboard box labeled TOWELS AND LINENS . Locating a thick terry washcloth, she
soaked it with hot water and poured a small amount of mango-scented body wash
into the center.
As she cleaned herself, she gazed at her
reflection in the vanity mirror. Her black hair was
