middle.
“I can’t believe we just did that.”
“Which part?” He chuckled into her ear, making her shiver.
“The…whole thing I guess.” I came three times in the span of what? Ten minutes?
“It’s been more like fifteen, but I’m glad I could wow you with my abilities as a lover.”
Brianna stiffened. Was he in her head? She’d assumed it had been a coincidence before.
“I told you, we’d be connected mentally after we mated.”
Brianna jerked from his arms and sat, turning to face him. “You just spoke into my head.”
“Yes.” He nodded.
“Oh my God. You weren’t kidding?” She hadn’t truly believed any of his ramblings until now. Truth be known, she still felt uncertain, but holy hell she was having one doozy of an illusion.
“It’s not an illusion, baby.” He tentatively reached for her and stroked his fingers down her arm. “You’ll get used to it.”
“Why can’t I hear all your thoughts then, wiseguy?”
“Because I’ve been doing this my whole life. I know how to block you. You’ll learn to block me too, over time.” He reached for her neck and wrapped his fingers around it to pull her forward. “Lucky for you, Juliana can help you understand all this. I’m afraid I’m kind of ignorant when it comes to blocking, but she’s apparently getting pretty good at blocking my brother Sergius.”
Powerless against the magnetic pull he had on her, Brianna leaned toward him and let him kiss her lips. She didn’t really respond appropriately, but what did he expect? Her mind was swimming with all the information she tried to process.
“Come here. I liked having you in my arms. We need to rest while we can. I’m not sure how long we’re going to be in here, but I have a suspicion we’re going to need all our brain cells when we finally get out.” He tugged her neck until she complied and allowed herself to be snuggled back into his embrace.
He fit her perfectly. She felt…cherished.
Relaxing once again in the protection of his arms, Brianna closed her eyes. She needed rest. Exhaustion took over.
Chapter Five
“What’s going on, Serg?” Jaxon communicated with his brother while he smoothed his mate’s hair away from her face.
She was asleep and he would never tire of watching her at rest. Her face had a peaceful angelic look. Her lips parted slightly, tilted on each side almost in a smile. At least he liked to think she was smiling.
“Well, hello. Where have you been? You’ve been blocking me for half an hour.” Sergius chuckled into Jaxon’s mind.
Micah added to the mirth with his own laugher.
“Where do you think I’ve been? Claiming my mate. Figured it would make McKinney less of a threat if I claimed her as soon as possible,” Jaxon responded.
“Good plan. Now you can communicate with her,” Micah said. “Bet that was a hardship,” he continued.
“Listen,” Sergius interrupted, “McKinney has been circling closer to you from behind that cave ever since you entered. There is no doubt he knows you’re in there. The question is why? Is he after you or the woman—”
“Brianna.” Jaxon cut him off with his mate’s name.
“Okaay. Brianna it is then.” Micah got serious again. “Anyway, while you’ve been claiming your woman, McKinney has been planning his next move. And the real question is, what is he waiting for? It seems our theory is correct; he isn’t fond of fire.”
“That’s certainly good information to stash away for later. Never know when it might come in handy.” Jaxon squeezed his mate closer as though he could somehow protect her better if she were nearly attached to him. “Speaking of fire…”
Sergius jumped back into the conversation. “The flames surrounding the entrance are almost contained. Sheriff Hardin is close by, waiting to get you out of there. Don’t take any chances though. Wait until we let you know either the coast is clear or you have company.”
The kind of company Sergius was talking about was
