Kline nodded distractedly. âIâll ask Allen to speak to the police,â she said, and she hurried out.
âLetâs go talk,â Josh said after a long sigh. Nancy nodded, and she and Ned followed him out of Rachelâs room.
After Mr. and Mrs. Kline went off to bed, Josh, Ned, and Nancy sat down in the den with glasses of lemonade and a bowl of chips.
âItâs been a long day,â Josh said, rubbing his eyes. âAnd a confusing one. I just donât understand whatâs happening.â
âWhoever broke in tonight was looking for something very specific,â Nancy offered. Ned nodded his silent agreement. âBut what?â
âThe only thing we know for certain is that it must be connected to Rachel,â Ned said. âAnd maybe also that it was something that could explain where she is now.â
âMaybe.â Nancy thought for a moment. âBut we wouldnât know what the connection was.â
âHereâs another question: Who pushed you over the deck tonight, and why?â Josh asked.
Nancy shrugged. âSomeone in Rachelâs crowd who doesnât want us to find her, thatâs my guess.â
âCould it have been Dennis?â Ned wondered.
âI doubt it,â Nancy said firmly. âJudging from the way he ran out of the Snake Pit tonight, I donât think heâd risk being seen at a party.â
Josh stood up. âI canât think anymore tonight, thatâs for sure. If you have time tomorrow, come by the studio and we can talk. My mom and dad are making me go to work everyday. They think itâs best if we try to stick to our normal routine.â
Nancy smiled. âI agree with them.â
After Josh went up to bed, Ned reached out to give Nancy a kiss. âAlone at last,â he murmured into her hair.
âDonât worry, Nickerson,â Nancy told him with a laugh. âYouâll have me all to yourself tomorrow.â
âWhy? What happens tomorrow?â Ned asked curiously.
âTomorrow weâre going to track down Dennis Harper. No matter what.â
â¢Â â¢Â â¢
As soon as Nancy got up the next morning she tried Dennisâs phone number for what seemed like the fiftieth time. Still no answer. After quickly dressing in white slacks and a roomy blue cotton shirt, she hurried downstairs.
Josh, Ned, and the Klines were already in the dining room. The doorbell rang almost as soon as Nancy sat down at the table.
âThat must be Lieutenant Heller,â Mr. Kline said, getting up to answer the door himself. âThe police promised to bring a fingerprint expert.â
Everyone left the table to follow the two people upstairs to Rachelâs room. The fingerprintwoman sighed when she saw the mess the intruder had left. Fingerprints would be almost impossible to lift.
âI checked with your neighbors last night,â the lieutenant said. âNone of them saw or heard anything out of the ordinary while you were out.â
âAnd nothing is missing,â Mrs. Kline added. âWe double-checked everything.â
âAre there any leads on my daughter, Lieutenant?â Mr. Kline asked. âHave you been able to locate her boyfriend, Dennis?â
Lieutenant Heller raised his hands in a helpless gesture. âNo leads, Iâm afraid, Mr. Kline. But I do have an address for the Harper boy, and weâre checking up on him.â
Nancyâs heart started to race. So the police knew where Dennis Harper lived. âCould you give me his address, Lieutenant?â she asked.
At the lieutenantâs quizzical expression, Karen Kline explained that Nancy was an amateur detective and that she was helping them find their daughter.
âHey, Iâve heard of you,â Heller said with a smile. âI read about you in the paper somewhere. What do you knowâDrewâs your name, right?â
Nancy blushed, and Ned gave her a little poke in
