mutual excitement was outlined in bold diagonal relief under our shorts, only held in check by the elastic waist bands.
    “Go ahead,” I said breathlessly.
    “No, you go. You’re first.”
    “Chicken.”
“You’re chicken. It was your idea.”
    “At the same time, then.”
    “All right.”
    “One…two…three…go!”
As if racing, we wriggled out of our briefs, kicked them away and straightened up again. At first we both found it difficult to look at one another, to gaze directly at what most drew our attention. Yet neither did we make any attempt to cover up our nakedness. Now that the last barriers of modesty had been removed, we were struck dumb with shyness.
There was a special feeling of intimacy in seeing him naked now, and it was quite different from watching a classmate in PE. In the locker room or the showers, nudity was taken for granted. But here in the privacy of my bedroom another boy’s body became also imbued with the “idea” of nakedness, the necessary prelude to the most private acts a boy could perform: bathing, defecation, or masturbation.
    “Well?”
I thought his penis was the biggest one I’d ever seen in my life, and felt my chest shiver. At the same time I was relieved to see that it looked so much like my own—even down to the swollen veins. It was just as I’d imagined it.
Poking up flat against his stomach, its bulging glans was glowing a deep reddish purple. At the base of the shaft was a wispy patch of light brown hair much sparser than my own. And hugging the groin tightly were the balls, small and close together, almost as if enclosed in a single sac. A few isolated hairs poked out from them.
My mind was in a daze. I felt light-headed, as if all this were happening in a dream…in some naughty daydream as I sat doodling at my school desk or reclining in my backyard hammock.
“You ever notice how much alike everyone looks?” I said. “I mean, alike in a way, but different in a way.”
“Yeah. There’s a guy named Mason in my class whose dick is shaped a little weird.”
    “How do you mean?”
“It’s curved a little. All the guys make fun of it behind his back.”
    I laughed.
“Hey, Guy, is it okay if I touch yours for just a second? I just want to know how it feels.”
    “Go ahead.”
Shyly, he reached out his hand and touched me. At the brush of his finger there was a twitch. We both giggled.
“I can’t help it.” Under our staring eyes, I felt myself swell up even bigger and stretch to the limit.
Giggling nervously, he continued his exploration. With his mouth slightly open, he traced a vein with his finger. I felt a faint tickle and shut my eyes. When I opened them again he had shifted around, kneeling to examine me closely, his face lowered in eager investigation.
“If you don’t watch it,” I laughed, “you’re gonna get it right in the face!”
“You’d better not!” He jerked his head back, but then brought it cautiously forward to continue his fascinated study.
After a moment I spoke up. “Now let me see yours.”
In his turn, he lay back, submitting himself to my exploration. His penis had gone a little soft, but at my first touch, it swelled out again, stiffening with a series of short, quick jerks. I rubbed the glans, marveling at its smooth velvety feel.
    “Hey! Don’t do that.”
It was slightly damp and warm, and I noticed for the first time a tiny clear drop of liquid quivering like a dewdrop on the very tip.
    “What’s this?”
Curiously I touched it, thinking it was a drop of urine, but when I withdrew my finger it clung and stretched out, following my movements like an elastic goo. I’d never noticed it before on my own.
    “Stop it,” he said breathlessly.
    “Why?”
    “You know.”
I flushed. Then, to get over the awkward pause by turning it into a joke, I grasped his shaft and began pumping.
“Is this how you do it?”
My heart was pounding so hard I could barely hear my own voice. The feel of Bobby’s
