foâ life, fool!â at Dexter.
Some little dark-skinned chick with cornrows asked Dexter in a tough voice, âWho is you?â
It didnât take Dexterâs smart mouth too long to respond. He told Cornrows, âIf you spent more time in English class instead of running with these losers, you would know âwho is youâ is grammatically incorrect. Watch my lips and say it with me: âwho are you?â â
Dexterâs diss left Cornrows feeling some kind of way. She was about to go off.
Bangs said to her girl, âMouse, chill out.â She looked back to Xavier. âAll right, boss. You got this.â She nodded in the direction of the south door. Her girls understood what that meant and began filing in that direction.
âBaby girl,â Xavier said to Bangs. âI canât tell you how to do you. But if you gonna be a gangsta, donât be a bully, you feel me?â
She smiled and said, âWe donât want any beef with the great Xavier.â Bangs gave Xavier a halfway slick look before following her gang.
Mouse was the last one. Before she started toward them, the thugged-out chick turned around to face the girl. Xavier and Dexter looked on as Mouse made an execution sign at the girl by dragging a hand slowly across her throat.
âYou see that?â Dexter asked Xavier, as Mouse finally followed the rest of her girls.
âYo, girls are getting worse than the dudes,â said Xavier. He looked down at the young girl.
The tension in the cafeteria seemed to ease up a bit with students going about their business.
âWhatâs your name, little mama?â Xavier asked her.
âDakota . . . Dakota Taylor,â she timidly answered.
The girl had a soft-spoken demeanor about her. She was a little cutie too.
Fresh meat, Xavier thought. The moment sheâd opened her mouth he already knew the scoop. Dakota was a freshman.
Dexter bent down and retrieved her book bag. âI guess this belongs to you,â he said, handing it over. âBy the way, my name is Dexter.â
âHi, Dexter,â Dakota said, almost with childlike innocence.
âAnd just in case you didnât hear, my name is Xavier Hunter.â
âNice to meet you, Xavier Hunter. I canât thank you enough for coming to my rescue.â
âIt was no big deal,â he said. Xavier already knew the answer but still had to ask, âWell, Dakota âLilâ Mamaâ Taylor, is this your first year at Coleman?â
Her smile was beautifulâdimples, the whole shebang. â âLilâ Mamaâ? I like that.â She fumbled around with the strap on her book bag. âYes, I am a freshman. Is it that obvious?â
Dexter suggested to her, âYou might wanna stay away from the short yellow bus crew.â He pointed in the direction where the SNLGs had made their exit. âLooks like theyâre thirsty to make a rep, so watch who you stare at around here.â
Dakota rolled her shoulders. âI just glanced at them,â she admitted.
âIt seemed to be enough to set them off,â Dexter explained. He turned to Xavier. âDo you realize Flip just sat there at the table like nothing was happening?â
Yep. Xavier had noticed it. But he didnât want to overreact. Besides, he didnât need anybodyâs help handling a bunch of girls. All the same, though, he was gonna have to keep an eye on Linus.
Xavier said to Dexter, âYou worry too much. Flipâs straight, man, you feel me?â
Dexter looked at Xavier like he wanted to say, âDude, wake up,â but thought better of it. He shook his head and walked away.
âSo, Xavier,â Dakota said, showing off those fantastic dimples. âWhat did Bangs mean when she mentioned you were the schoolâs savior?â
âI donât know, the girlâs probably on something,â Xavier joked.
Dakota stared dreamily up into Xavierâs
