masterâs arrogant tone.
The Amandán started to answer when it pricked its ears up at the growl of an engine. Snapping its teeth in frustration, it slunk behind the wall and crashed away through the underbrush filling the ravine. As the three youths looked at each other, a vehicle pulled into the driveway; a door slammed closed with a squeal a moment later.
âWe better go,â Rafe said. He pushed his sister toward the side of the house.
âHere, take these.â Finn handed the knives over. âAt least youâll be armed. Remember what I told you about fighting the Amandán?â
âKeep your back to a wall or tree,â Rafe said.
âStick them with the sharp end,â Savannah added.
âAnd hold tight to your weapon,â said a deep voice. The back screen slapped open. Gideon sauntered out, thumbs tucked in his jeans pockets. He nodded at the blades in their hands. âI take it those are mine?â
The friends looked at each other in alarm. Finn braced himself. âIt was my idea. I wanted them to haveââ
With a wave of dismissal, Gideon walked closer. âIt was the right thing to do.â
âBy the way, an Amandán was just here a minute ago. On the other side of the wall.â
Gideon stiffened. âDid it try anything?â
âNo, sir, it just made a lot of threats. It took off when it heard your truck.â
âCurious. They are normally skittish around humans in groups.â The Knight grunted, gazing into the woods beyond. After a moment, he asked the twins. âDo you know how to use a knife?â They shook their heads. âWould you like me to teach you, then?â
Rafe and Savannah glanced at each other. A silent conversation flowed between them. Then Savannah cleared her throat.
âMr. Lir? You should know that our parents donât want us around you. In fact, weâre not even supposed to be over here.â
âAh, I see.â A shadow flickered across his face. âAnd I can guess why.â He studied them. âSo, tell me, lass. Do you think Iâm a monster to young Finn here?â
âNope.â Trust shone in Savannahâs dark eyes.
âAnd do you think it is wise to disobey your parents?â
âNo.â Rafe glanced around the yard. âBut we need to learn this stuff. And we canât learn it by ourselves.â
âYou can teach them in secret,â Finn said. âWhen Mr. and Mrs. Steel arenât around.â
âI cannot. To do so would not only be dishonest, it would not be respecting their parentsâ wishes. So you two best return home.â
âAh, come on, Gideon,â Finn argued. âMrs. Steelâs at the hospital all the time doing her doctor thing, and Mr. Steel is teaching some seminar for the next two weeks at the college. They wouldnât even know.â
â I would know. And so would the three of you.â
âYou could just teach themââ
âNo.â
ââthe basics so that they could defend themselves.â
âNo.â
âIt would only be for a few weeks, then theyâd be able toââ
âI said, no.â
âYouâre not even listening to me.â Finnâs voice rose in frustration.
âNo, youâre not listening to me !â Gideon snapped, just as frustrated. A muscle danced in his jaw. âContinue arguing, and youâll find yourself spending the day in your room.â
Embarrassment at being slapped down in front of his friends made Finnâs cheeks burn. âYou just donât want me hanging out with them because theyâre mortal.â Chin jutting out, he squared up to his master and locked gazes.
âOh, so now youâre putting words in my mouth?â Gideon fired back.
Brother and sister froze in surprise at both their tones and the abrupt flare-up of tempers. Tugging on her brotherâs arm, Savannah inched toward the side
