small stone set in silver. âItâs kind of grayish.â
âMost people arenât black or white,â Wayne said with a shrug. âI try to do the right thing. Anyway, this was a gift to help remind me of that.â
âCool,â Max said, watching as Wayne slipped the amulet back under his shirt. He looked at the rope, remembering his humiliation from earlierâit represented everything that was wrong in his world. Here hewas a loser. In the Magrus he was something special.
Overhead, the patter of rain began to hit the old schoolâs roof.
âIf I go, can I come back?â Max asked after a moment.
âOf course.â
âI can just step back and forth anytime I want?â
âI donât see why not.â
Max scratched his head. âAnd they really want me to come back? To rebuild the Tower?â
âThey do,â Wayne answered. âYouâre an important and powerful person.â
Max hesitatedâit was one thing to think heâd made up his mind, but another to actually say it out loud. He took a breath. âYesâI want to go back.â
âAha!â came Dirkâs voice from behind the bleachers. He stepped out to face them, pointing at Max with an accusatory finger. âSend me away while you go and find Wayne by yourself, huh? And you really thought I was going to fall for that? I knew you were up to something.â
âYou followed me?â Max did his best to sound outraged even though he knew Dirk was right.
âWe both did,â Sarah announced, stepping out to join Dirk.
Max suddenly had a lump in his throat that felt as big as a grapefruit. âLook, I didnât want to hurt anyoneâs feelings. I just didnât want to say anything.â
âYeah, well, obviously,â Dirk replied, his hands on his hips.
âItâs just that everythingâs different now,â Max continued. âYou donât know how it feels to have the kind of power I had in the Magrus. I stood before kings and their armies, and they listened to me. And then I come home and have to put up with people like Ricky Reynolds. They just wonât leave me alone, even though I know I could reach out to the Codex and stop them. Even here in the Techrus where magic doesnât work right, I could do enough to make sure they never laid a hand on me or anyone like me again. But I . . . canât. And so Iâm just tired of being the victim.â
Sarahâs expression softened. âMax, Iâm so sorry.â
âIt used to be that I was a kid pretending to be a wizard,â Max continued. âBut now Iâm a wizard pretending to be a kid. I was born in the Magrus; my father was the greatest arch-sorcerer who ever lived. Whatever Iâm supposed to do with my life, itâs going to be thereânot here.â
âWhat about us?â Dirk asked, his voice growing quiet. âYou know, your friends?â
âGuys, itâs not like Iâm going and will never come back. Iâll have the Shadric Portal, remember?â Max turned to Wayne, realizing he wasnât 100 percent sure on that point.
âIt belongs to you,â Wayne said. âWho else could even use it?â
âSee?â Max continued. âI can step between the realms whenever I want. You guys can come and visit me whenever you want.â
âWhat about school?â Sarah asked. âYou canât just drop out.â
âHe can continue his studies at the Wizardâs Tower,â Wayne interjected. âIâm sure thereâs still a lot for him to learn.â
Max nodded. âSo when you think about it, itâs not like Iâm quitting schoolâIâm just switching schools. Donât you guys see? This is what Iâm supposed to do.â
âEven if it is,â Sarah said, choosing her words carefully, âthere are ways back to the Magrus that donât involve black magic.
