are your pants all wet?â
I looked down. My pants were soaked. âI was walking by the creek and kind of fell in.â
âThrough the ice?â
âYeah.â
âWhat were you doing by the creek?â
âWalking.â
He just looked at me blankly. He likely would have said more but he seemed pretty much baffled by most things I did these days. âIt sounds like thereâs water running.â
âYeah, uh, itâs the toiletâ¦you know how it runs sometimes.â
âIt sounds like the shower.â
Just then the Bee pulled into the driveway.
âLooks like Mom came home early,â my father said.
Now I was worried. âIâm going to take a shower,â I said. âMom wouldnât want me to catch a chill.â I hurried back to the bathroom. Graceâs clothes were in a pile on the floor outside the shower.
âAre you okay?â I asked.
âYes.â She sounded normal again.
âYou scared me,â I said.
âMe too.â
âWe have a problem. My mom just got home.â
She stuck her head out. âWhat do we do?â
âJust stay in there, Iâll figure something out.â
âI need some clothes.â
âIâll find some.â
Fortunately my mom saved my clothes after I grew out of them for Joel. I could hear my brother talking to my mother in the hall. When their voices quieted, I opened the door a crack and peered out. Joel was just a few yards away. âHey,â I called in a loud whisper.
He turned to me. âWhat?â
âGet me some of my old clothes from the hand-me-down box.â
âWhy?â
âGrace fell in the creek.â
It took a moment for him to make the connection. âIs she in there?â
âYes.â
âWith you? â
âJust get the clothes,â I said. âAnd donât let Mom see you.â
As if on cue, my mom came around the corner. âWhat are you doing?â
âI was just asking Joel to get me some dry clothes. I fell in the creek.â
âThrough the ice?â
âYeah.â
âWhat were you doing by the creek?â
âWalking.â
She looked at me with the same blank expression my father had. Then she said, âSupper will be ready in a half hour.â
When she was gone, Joel asked, âWhat should I get?â
âJust something warm. Not my summer clothes.â
âDoes she want underwear too?â
I thought about it. âI guess.â
I shut and locked the door. A few minutes later Joel knocked. I cracked open the door; he was holding a stack of clothes.
âDid you get socks?â
âYou didnât say to.â
âOf course she needs socks. Whereâs Mom right now?â
âSheâs making dinner.â
âIâve got to get Grace out of here.â I thought for a moment. âI need you to create a diversion.â
Joel smiled and nodded his approval. He had read enough comic books that the idea of creating a diversion clearly pleased him. âI know. Iâll put a dishcloth on one of the stove burners and start a fire in the kitchen. Then, while Momâs trying to put it out, you could sneak her out the back.â
I looked at him. âThatâs the stupidest thing Iâve ever heard. Just ask her to help you with your homework.â
âWhat kind of distraction is that?â
âIf the house is on fire, weâre all in trouble.â
âI donât have any homework.â
âMake some up.â
The shower shut off.
âJust give us five minutes. Make sure Momâs in the kitchen. Iâll take Grace out through our bedroom window.â
âI canât believe youâre in there with a naked girl.â
âJust do it.â I shut and locked the door.
âCould you get me a towel?â Grace whispered.
I took one from the towel rack and turning my head handed it around the corner of the shower.
