wistful look at Garnet’s rounded ass. “She is a beauty. She has possessed you, as I feared she would.”
Garnet stretched, her motion so seductive Romulus’ cock stood at attention even though he’d come mere moments earlier.
    “Have I possessed you, Master?”
“I fear you have.” He sighed, mentally accepting that he couldn’t hold her at arm’s length. “Now be silent while I attend to business.”
She clutched his forearms, as though to let him know she intended to be heard. “Tell me, what is this about this new law that has you so upset, and what could it possibly have to do with you losing your livelihood?”
“Ask your sister’s mate. The prince has issued an edict that stands to ruin all of us who make our living in the Street of Pleasure.” Romulus stalked across the room and grabbed the document that was causing him so much distress from a table near the door. He tossed it Garnet’s way. “Here, read it for yourself. Now I must think of something more immediately pressing. What do I do with Antonio, now that you’ve stolen the lust I once felt only for him?”
“Why not give him his choice among the thousands of sex slaves you possess? It seems unfair that you’ve kept him locked away all these years, serving your needs without regard to his own.” Garnet glanced at the royal edict, but without the degree of obvious concern Romulus had expected her to display.
Actually, her suggestion made sense. He turned to Antonio. “My mate is right. Tonight I will take you to my finest emporium. To prevent speculation about the strong resemblance between us, I’ll introduce you as my younger brother, newly arrived from Aurelion to help me celebrate my mating. You may amuse yourself by managing the daily slave auctions, and you may choose a eunuch or two who please you and reserve them for yourself. Choose quickly, for if this new law takes effect there will be no more eunuchs made or imported. There may even be a mass exodus of the ones now working as sex slaves, since their owners must offer them their freedom, unless I’m able to persuade Prince Arik of his folly in establishing this new law.”
“But…you cannot mean to toss me away.”
Romulus raised his hand, cutting off Antonio’s protest. “Of course not. You will always be my life companion. We simply won’t be constant bedmates.”
    “But Master—”
“I will hear no argument from you. Take another suite within this house and choose servants to take care of your rooms and belongings. Garnet will supervise the servants here.”
    “You are sure, Master?”
“Positive. Tomorrow I will go with my mate to plead my case before her sister and our crown prince. Tonight I want you to go to one of the emporiums, introduce yourself as my brother and choose a mate of your own.”

    Chapter Three

Would Antonio find a soul mate? Would he be happy?
Romulus had left early to take care of some details at one of his emporiums. Garnet lay fiddling with the bedcovers, recalling with a little regret the brief interlude she’d shared with Romulus and his slave—or rather his brother, she must remember to say in public.
Part of her wished they could have continued the ménage, while her heart told her it was only Romulus with whom she wanted to share this bed. She stretched out, pleasantly sore from the attention he’d bestowed on her earlier along with a magnificent cask of jewels and a dozen fine silk robes for her to wear whenever she ventured outside their quarters.
How many times she’d dreamed of wallowing in precious gems, flaunting her mate’s wealth before friends and strangers, basking in their envy. Now those things didn’t matter so much, for the real treasure she’d gained was Romulus himself and not the beautiful gifts he might provide her.
Her mate should be back soon, because they both must dress for their meeting with Arik. Garnet rose and rummaged through his closet, shaking her head at the few garments
