way home, not sure what to make out of the most current events. When they returned home, Rhonda took the packages and started up the stairs.
“Rhonda, I would like for you to wear the pale green dress this evening.”
Rhonda was thankful for that because she had no idea which dress she would choose. She nodded and proceeded up to her bedroom. She showered and even splashed on some perfume that she had had before her parents’ death. She used to love dressing up and wearing perfume and makeup, but it had all seemed pointless until now. Joel obviously did not need to see her at her best. He couldn’t seem to keep his hands off her, even at her worst.
Since moving in with Joel, Rhonda had her own servant who helped her attend to her needs. Anna was in her early forties, fairly attractive, and always ready to help. Tonight, Anna was going to take Rhonda’s long blonde hair and sweep it up and away from her face. Rhonda went to her jewelry box, withdrew a broach that had belonged to her mother, and handed the broach to Anna and asked her to incorporate it into her hairstyle.
Rhonda had no idea that the broach had been given to her mother by Joel.
Once her hair and makeup was done, Rhonda turned and looked in shock at the woman in the mirror who stared back at her. This woman looked elegant and poised, not at all like the young girl who was trying her best to keep up with the sexual appetite of her godfather.
Joel was standing at the foot of the stairs when Rhonda descended. Her beauty made him catch his breath. She had no way of knowing how much she looked like her mother when her mother was that age. The woman who was coming down the stairs looked like she could play hostess to the world. The hair and makeup had transformed her into a woman of sophistication, and one he would be proud to have on his arm this evening.
Rhonda did not know why, but Joel’s approval was important to her. This was the first time she was allowed to be around other people, and she desperately wanted to please him. Maybe if she was good at this he would consider entertaining more and engaging in sex less.
When Joel started to follow Rhonda into the front sitting room, he noticed the broach for the first time. All of a sudden, it was like a bucket of ice water had been poured over him. What was Rhonda up to, wearing the same broach that he had given her mother all of those years ago?
Before he had time to react, the front doorbell rang, signaling the arrival of his guests. Howard and Nancy Conley and Derek and Linda Wilhoit were shown into the sitting room by the servant who had answered the door.
“Harold and Nancy, Derek and Linda, please allow me to introduce my ward to you, Miss Rhonda Fallon,” Joel said.
Rhonda thought she detected a hint of sarcasm in Joel’s voice, but she held out her hand to shake hands with their guests.
“Joel, you sly devil! You have been holding out on us. We didn’t realize that you had taken in a ward,” Harold said.
“Rhonda’s parents were killed in a car crash, and I had agreed at her birth to be her godfather. We are both still grieving their loss, but we are trying to move beyond it,” Joel said.
“My dear, how horrible for you,” Nancy said. “I am so sorry for your loss. But it looks like Joel is treating you well.”
If you only knew , Rhonda thought. But she was not about to let on to Joel’s guests her true feelings for her godfather.
“I appreciate your kind words. It has been very difficult, but one must find a way to go on with their lives,” Rhonda said.
Rhonda felt Joel’s grip on her arm tighten, and she wondered if she had said something offensive to him. He was so hard to read sometimes. She had seen his eyes light up when she walked down the stairs, but almost instantly his mood had changed. This dinner party was his idea. Why did he all of a sudden act like he was ready for the evening to come to an end?
Dinner was less stressful, with everybody wanting to get to
