with anything?â Hope said to Michael. He crossed his arms across his chest and shrugged. She looked at Austin. âWhat about my father?â She could barely get the question out and her voice cracked.
âYou can call your grandmother if youâd like,â Austin said. âOr just about anybody in Leavenworth. Theyâll tell you I am who I say I am.â
âWhat about my father?â Hope asked again. âIs he with her?â
Michael stepped in front of her as if trying to block out the sight of Austin. âDonât get worked up. This guy could be lying.â
âI donât know anything about your father,â Austin said. âBut Yvette does. She wonât share the details with me, so youâll have to ask her yourself.â
âHave you talked to Joy or Faith yet?â
âNo, youâre the first.â
âWhy?â
âYvette thought as the middle child youâd be most likely to persuade the other two.â
âShe was wrong,â Hope said. âThey never listen to me.â Theyâd flat out rejected her again. But would they reject an invitation from their estranged grandmother? Could Hope be getting her Christmas wish after all? From the back room came a very long and very loud howl.
Hope looked at Austin. He held eye contact. The dog continued to howl. âIs my grandmother allergic to dogs?â she asked.
âNo,â Austin said. âI donât think so.â
The dog howled again. Hope smiled. âGood. Put me down for a plus one.â
A smile crept over Austinâs face, the kind of smile that made a girl almost swoon. âYou got it,â he said.
âBut we have tickets to Hawaii,â Michael said.
âYou have tickets to Hawaii,â Hope said.
Michael stared at her. Then pointed at her. Then shifted his weight. Then shook his head as if shaking her off. âWeâre done,â he said. âCompletely over.â
Oh, thank God. âPeace on earth,â Hope said, and flashed him a smile. He narrowed his eyes, then turned and walked out the door, out of her life. She wished him well and mentally tossed him a fishing pole.
CHAPTER 6
âYou canât seriously tell me youâre getting into a truck with a total stranger and that slobbery beast and taking off for Leavenworth instead of coming to Hawaii with me?â So much for getting rid of him that easy. Michael cut her off just as she was about to climb into the passenger side of Austinâs red pickup. The beast was already in the truck along with Austin.
âIâve taken precautions,â Hope said. Sheâd taken a picture of his driverâs license and had posted it on all her social media sites in case he was a serial killer. Austin didnât put up an argument. Most serial killers probably would. Sheâd also called Yvette Garland and confirmed Austin was her neighbor and she had sent him. It was probably the shortest conversation of her life, and Hope now had more questions than ever. She had to meet this woman, she had to find out what happened to her father.
âIf you do this, weâre over,â Michael said.
âYou already ended it ten minutes ago,â Hope pointed out.
âI was hurt. Iâm giving you a second chance.â
âNo thank you,â Hope said.
âI mean it. Weâre done.â
âI understand.â She wasnât smiling, was she? She would have to be careful not to show her relief.
Michael shifted, thoroughly flummoxed. âIâm just trying to get through to you.â
âSheâs my grandmother.â
âWho abandoned you.â
âMy father abandoned me. I canât blame that on her.â
âYouâre being manipulated.â
âIâm going to Leavenworth to meet my grandmother.â
âIf you make it there alive,â Michael said.
âIf he says or does anything weird, Iâll ditch
