he returned to his desk. Dana made things interesting and he liked that in a woman.
Â
D ANA PACED IN L EXIâS office. The fountain and the spa music in the background were supposed to be soothing. Instead it made her want to climb the walls. Or shoot something.
After she was done here, she would go work out for a couple of hours. Maybe take out her frustrations on a punching bag.
Lexi glanced up from the folders. Her normally pale skin had gone white, her eyes were wide.
âDid you read this?â she asked.
Dana nodded. âScary stuff.â
âI canât believe it, but even as I say that, thereâs a part of me that isnât surprised. Jedâs ruthless. Heâs always been that way. He pretties it up when he has to, but itâs there. Still, he could have killed his own daughter. Did he even care that Izzy was on the oil rig? What about the other lives? But hey, winning is all that matters, right?â Her voice rose as she spoke, her tone got more shrill.
Dana moved to the desk and looked at her. âDeep breaths. Baby on board and all that. Try to stay calm.â
Lexi nodded and exhaled slowly. âI know. Iâll be okay. Iâm just in shock. Jed doing all this. Treason.â She sighed. âI need to think about this. We need a plan. The next step. Iâm going to need a little time.â
Dana settled across from her desk. âTake all the time you need. You have a lot going on.â
Lexi leaned back in her chair. âIâm having a baby. Women do it every day.â
âI donât care about them, I care about you. Youâre my friend.â
âThank you. Iâm doing okay. This is a stunner, but Iâll get through it. Weâre working together and that makes me feel better.â
Dana eyed Lexiâs growing belly. âJust remember whatâs important. We can go after Jed anytime.â
âWeâre not stopping because Iâm pregnant. Iâm taking excellent care of myself and Cruz practically hovers.â
âSkye mentioned something about a baby shower.â Dana managed to get the sentence out without shuddering. She wasnât really a baby-wedding shower kind of person. What was up with the strange games? And why did the food have to be cute?
Lexi grinned. âYouâll be there, honey, if we have to drag you. Donât think youâre getting out of it.â
âOh, joy.â
âIt could be worse.â
âHow?â
âThere could be balloon animals.â
âI happen to like balloon animals.â
Lexi laughed. âIt wonât be too horrible, I promise. No color-coordinated mints.â
âIs Skye planning the shower?â Skye might run a nonprofit foundation but she was also an expert partyplanner. Her system of organization rivaled any battle plan the Pentagon put out.
âYes. Okay. Youâre right. The mints might match. But it will still be fun.â
âIf you define the word very loosely.â
âPoor Dana,â Lexi teased. âMy baby shower is only the start. Skyeâs talking about getting married.â
âWe all knew that was going to happen,â Dana grumbled. Skye was madly in love. No one would be surprised when she and Mitch set the date. âYouâll be next.â
âAfter the baby is born,â Lexi said. âI never planned to be unconventional, but here I am, having a baby and then getting married. Iâm sure my mother is horrified. Cruz and I are talking about late spring. So youâll have time to recover.â
Which she would need, Dana thought. âAt least Izzy is more the type to simply run off some weekend and show up Monday with a wedding ring and a new last name. She was always my favorite.â
Lexi laughed again. âHow you suffer for us all.â
âI know. Thatâs me. The suffering friend.â
âMaybe youâll meet someone you want to marry.â
âNo,
