but I saw enough. He pulled a switchblade from his pocket and held it beneath Carlosâs chin.
The bigger guy, standing tall, made a quick slitting motion across his throat with a finger.
âDid you see that?â Jennifer said.
âNo,â I said, âI did not see that knife. Knives are not allowed in the school. Remember, thatâs why they have metal detectors here. Therefore, what I saw could not have been a knife.â
Jennifer knew I was being sarcastic. âWhat are you going to do about it?â she asked.
Carlos stood up.
âDo about what?â I replied, although I knew exactly what she meant.
âYou canât let them threaten Carlos.â
âYou mean if I ask them nice,â I whispered, âmaybe theyâll just go away and leave him alone?â
The smaller guy tucked the switchblade into his back pocket. They started to lead Carlos away from the window.
âIf youâre not going to stop them,â Jennifer whispered, âthen I will.â
âSure,â I said. âLet me hold your purse while you beat them up for me.â
She took a step toward them.
I groaned. I grabbed her arm as she tried to walk away.
âWait here,â I said. âGet ready to call nine-one-one. Iâll need an ambulance.â
I walked toward the small group.
All three turned their heads toward me.
âHey, guys,â I said.
âBeat it,â the bigger guy said.
âI canât,â I said. I spoke to Carlos. âYou okay? You need help?â
He shook his head.
âYou sure?â I asked. âI saw that guy pull a knife on you.â
Both of the tattooed guys stepped toward me.
âListen, jerk,â the smaller one said, âweâll take you down right now. Itâll happen so fast weâll be out of here before anyone notices your guts on the floor.â
I was scared. But I was in this too far to back down.
âJust leave him alone,â I said.
âOr what?â the big one sneered.
I didnât have a good âor whatâ to give him as an answer. I did my best to stare him down and show him I wasnât afraid. Although I was.
He took another step closer. I held my ground. I didnât look away.
He was so close that we could have bumped heads. His shiny brown eyes looked like snakeâs eyes.
Then, without warning, he stepped back.
âOkay,â he said. âYou win this one. But weâll be looking for you.â
I hid my surprise, hardly able to believe that my tough guy act had worked. Especially since Iâd never tried it before.
âYeah?â I said, feeling braver. âAnytime you want, bring it on.â
He didnât answer. He and his friend walked away.
Leaving me and Carlos, with Jennifer somewhere behind me.
I let out the breath Iâd been holding.
Wow, I thought, I hope Jennifer caught all of that. Forcing those two to back down had been kind of impressive, even if I did say it myself.
âHi,â I said to Carlos, âglad we could help. It looked like you were in trouble there.â
chapter fifteen
âYou guys gone crazy?â His eyes were wide.
âThey pulled a knife on you. What else were we going to do?â I was more than a little proud that they had just backed off. I wasnât going to mention that Jennifer had made me stand up to them. âAnd I wanted to talk to you.â
âMan, you got any idea who they are?â
His words had this fast, cool rhythm.
âNo. Iâm new around here. My name is David Calvin.â
Jennifer stepped up beside me.
âAnd this is Jennifer Lewis,â I said.
I stuck out my hand, waiting for him to shake it and introduce himself, even though I already knew his name.
He ignored my hand. He didnât introduce himself.
Instead, Carlos Pelayo groaned. âWatch your back. Thatâs all I can say. Watch your back. Nobody messes with those guys and gets away with
