tell me?â
âI will. One day, I promise. Right now itâs too dangerous. You okay with that?â
He grins ruefully. âGuess I have to be.â
âThereâs a lot more to my fatherâs death.â
âOh yeah?â he says, laughing. âTell me something I
donât
know.â
âMadison and me ⦠weâve got unfinished business.â
By the time we say good night and head for our houses, itâs past midnight. The next day, I decide Iâm going to stay home. In fact, my plan is to stay in my bedroom with the pages until I can figure out what to do. Iâve pretty much decided that destroying the documents is the way to go. But first I scan the pages, set up a brand-new file storage account on a new Web site that claims to be super secure, behind a password Iâve never used before.
And then I erase all traces of my activity from the computerâs browser history. So even if Madison breaks in again, he wonât be able to follow what Iâve done.
This is all very absorbing, so when Ollie turns up on my doorstep around lunchtime, she takes me by surprise.
âHey,â she says, her voice all soft. âI was looking for you yesterday. Where were you?â
âTyler and I went on a trip.â
âFun?â
âTo be honest, scary.â
We go upstairs and I turn off the TV.
âScary? How?â
I hesitate. But sheâs only going to hear the same from Tyler.
âWe found something. Another clue to the Ix Codex.â
Sheâs blown away. âWow! Amazing! What is it?â
I shake my head. âYou know what, Ollie, it was great having you and Ty to help me last time, but this time ⦠I donât know. I already got you both into trouble. So Iâm going to finish thisâdestroy everything I have about that codex, forget about it, and get on with my life.â
âYou really think itâs that dangerous?â
âI
know
it is.â
âAnd youâre worried about me?â she says with a hint of a smile.
âWhat do you think? Of course!â
âThatâs really sweet.â
She stares into my eyes then and I really donât know what to say.
ââSweetâ ⦠come on, now,â I say with a nervous grin. âNo guy wants to be âsweet.ââ
She steps a little closer. âOkay. Youâre not âsweet.ââ
âGood.â
She takes another step. I can smell her perfume; itâs like flowers after rain.
âI stopped thinking of you as âsweetâ back in Mexico.â
My mouth goes dry. âUh-huh â¦â
She takes both my hands in hers. âYeah. And look ⦠youâre taller than me now.â
âA bit. Itâs only âcause, well, youâre really â¦â
âPetite?â
âYeah.â
What are we doing? She canât be thinking what Iâm thinking
â¦
But she keeps going. âThink youâll get taller?â
âHope so.â
She shrugs, smiles. âA little taller couldnât hurt.â
Weâre standing inches apart; sheâs holding my hands, breathing right against my mouth, and I somehow canât make myself move.
Sheâs two years older than you, idiot! Whatever you think this is, youâre wrong. One false move and itâll be a slap in the face for you
.
And right then, she leans closer and kisses me. Right on the lips. I keep thinking sheâs going to stop but she doesnât and she doesnât push me away. Eventually itâs
me
who pulls away ⦠because I have no clue what to do next.
I hunt for something to say, which is tricky because I can hardly breathe.
She smiles. âThat wasnât so bad, was it?â
I cough nervously. âNo ⦠no ⦠it was like ⦠wow!â
She leans a wrist on my shoulder and actually runs her fingers through my hair. âYouâre not weirded out that Iâm
