heâd ever had. But he wanted her so much, all the time, that sound thinking no longer factored in for him.
Beth smiled, and then looked beyond him. âBen brought everything here?â
Levi glanced behind him at the stack of her once-gaily wrapped gifts. âYeah. I can help you repair those tomorrow if you want.â
âWhy?â
He turned back to her. âBecause you dropped them on account of me. Running away from me.â
Her smile slipped. âI wasnât running.â
Looked like running to him, but he didnât want to antagonize her. âOkay.â Levi soaked in the sight of her, then caught himself. âSorry.â He held the door wider. âCome on in.â
She did. Cautiously.
âWeâve got two beds, like you requested.â The suite came with a queen-sized bed, but Ben had also delivered a rollaway. âIâll use the crappy one.â
Beth frowned at the lumpy, bent-in-the-middle cot. âYouâd barely fit. Iâll use it.â
âNo, Iââ
âDonât be noble, Levi, okay? I really donât mind, and I really will fit better.â She eyed him head to toe and back again. âYouâre what? Over six feet, right?â
That look put him back on his heels. In a low voice, he said, âSix-two.â
âThere, you see?â She nodded. âA good eight inches taller than me. And heavier.â
Why this conversation made him hot, Levi didnât know. But maybe just the comparison of her small female frame to his larger, stronger body was enough to remind him how well they fit together. âBy at least seventy pounds.â
As if that proved her point beyond argument, Beth said, âSo Iâll use the rollaway and you can have the queen, and weâll both be comfortable.â
Baloney. Heâd be miserable all night and he knew it.
Beth waited for his agreement. âOkay?â
âFine.â Since they wouldnât be sharing one, he didnât want to argue about the beds. âAre you hungry? Ben was nice enough to bring us up some stuff from the kitchen. I put it in the little fridge.â
âBen is my hero. Iâm starved.â She headed for the kitchenette. âWhat do we have?â
âIâm not sure. It was all in containers.â And heâd been too anxious to see her to worry about food. Levi followed her. âIt smelled good.â
âWell whatever it is, itâs sure to be good. Benâs cook is the best.â In short order, Beth emptied the fridge of the containers and opened them all on the miniscule counter. âMmmm,â she purred, peeking into the first container. âChicken salad, my favorite.â She also found croissants, pickles, fruit, and slabs of chocolate cake smothered in icing. â Manna from heaven.â
Watching her made Levi hungryâjust not for food. Beth wasnât a big woman by any stretch, but heâd never seen her fuss about her weight or struggle with a diet as most women seemed prone to do. âI have some paper plates here. Do we have anything to drink?â
âThereâs a cola machine around the corner.â Assuming heâd go, she said, âIâll take a Coke.â
âYouâll owe me fifty cents.â
Busy loading the croissants with the chicken salad, Beth laughed. âIâd rather owe you than cheat you out of it.â She winked at him. âWhile youâre gone, Iâll put on coffee to drink with our cake.â
Fifteen minutes later, Beth slumped back in her seat with a hearty sigh. âDelicious. Iâm stuffed.â
âYou were right.â Levi finished off his coffee. âBenâs cook is incredible.â
âIâll tell Horace you said so.â
Levi studied her relaxed pose. âItâs nice seeing you like this for a change.â
She immediately stiffened. âWhat do you mean?â
âEver since last
