why wouldnât there be, especially among the family of the late queen. So when the kingâs brother, Duke Bluetooth of Baylandââ
âWas he really named Bluetooth?â Jinx interrupted.
âYes,â said the witch, with a purple puff of annoyance. âDo you want to hear this or not?â
âSorry,â said Jinx.
âWhere was I?â
âThe Duke of Bayland,â Elfwyn said.
âYes. Duke Bluetooth. Yes, well, he seized the throne. Killed his brother. Did it himself, very properly, no assassins or poison or anything like that. He ran him through very nicely with a sword, as brothers ought, and he meant to do the same for the queen and the baby prince, only somehow or other in the confusionââ The witch stopped, took a sip of brew, and looked around at all of them.
âYes?â said Elfwyn.
âWhat happened?â said Reven.
Jinx didnât say anything, because he was still annoyed at being shushed.
Witch Seymour smacked his lips over the brew. âThat just happens to be the little bit that nobody knows. The lovely young queen grabbed up her baby stepson and fled from her brother-in-law. Some say he caught up with them and slew them both, and wiped his bloody sword on his sky-blue velvet pantaloons. I myself do not believe that. If they had been crimson, he might have, but sky-blue? Ridiculous. Others say she fled into the forestâthatâs the Urwald to usâand was immediately devoured by werewolves. Or possibly vampires, I forget. Myself, I have always wondered if she might have known her way around the Urwald better than that. She had the look, to me, of an Urwald girl.â
âLots of Urwald girls get devoured by werewolves,â said Jinx.
âYour friend doesnât seem to think thatâs what happened.â
âNo,â said Reven. âThatâs not what happened.â He took a deep breath. The lines of his curse were red, and he had to struggle to say anything. âYou can cross the Urwald if you stick to the path.â
âOh yes. Trust an Urwald girl for that,â said the witch. âSo, off you go to Keyland. Taking Simonâs apprentice with you because Simonâs decided to dabble in foreign affairs. And then what do you do? Do you go to the palace and explain to King Bluetooth that youâre back now and heâll have to step aside? A problem: you canât explain anything, because of your curse. Another problem: heâs still got that sword. Whatâs the plan, eh?â
It was a good point.
âIâm going with him,â said Elfwyn. âTo explain to people who he is.â
âAnd which people did you intend to explain to?â said Witch Seymour. âBecause one canât recommend explaining to King Bluetooth. Not from what oneâs seen of him.â
âWe hadnât really planned,â said Elfwyn.
âYou donât say.â
âWhat would you advise, sir?â said Reven.
âSpeaking to Dame Franca. If sheâs still alive.â
âWhoâs Dame Franca?â
âWell, if you are Prince Raymond, she was your nursemaid.â
âDoes she live in Keyland?â said Elfwyn.
âShe did, the last one heard. She can probably tell you if our boy is really Prince Raymond. Donât go calling her âDameâ Franca, mind. Call her âMissus.â No point in getting her killed.â
âIâm afraid I donât follow,â said Reven.
âBeheaded. Invited to foxtrot in red-hot iron footwear. Parboiled. Et cetera.â
âFor being called Dame?â
âFor being a witch. Why do you think one left Keyland?â
âOh,â said Reven.
âTalk to her, but be careful. We donât necessarily know whose side sheâs on, do we, Whitlock? If sheâs still alive, and still in Keyland, chances are sheâs on King Bluetoothâs side, beheadings notwithstanding, and will turn
