been discussing you â¦â But just then Kurt Gresham, showered, shaved and pinkly cherubic, came ambling toward them. âLook,â the physician said. âWe need a talk, a long talk, and this is neither the time nor the place. I come into New York every Tuesday. May I drop in on you?â
âOf course, Doctor.â
âThis Tuesday?â
âCertainly.â
âOne oâclock all right? At your office?â
âOne oâclock will be fine.â
Then Kurt Gresham was upon them. âTony and Karen are outside on the patio. Letâs join them, gentlemen.â
âWhy wasnât Mr. Mitchell your fourth, Kurt?â Dr. Stone asked.
âTony doesnât play golf, Doctor.â
âThen why is he here?â Dr. Stone seemed puzzled.
âHe likes my wife,â chuckled the millionaire, âamong other females. And he likes my money, and he and Harry are old friends. Those are three pretty good reasons on a beautiful day, even if he doesnât like golf. Oh, there they are â¦â
In the warm yellow sunshine, over a glass-topped table, the four men and Karen Gresham had cocktails.
âSee here,â said Dr. Stone suddenly. âWhy donât you all stay up here and make an evening of it as my guests? Weâll have dinner â¦â
âHow sad,â said Gresham. âI canât, Doctor. I have a business appointment in the city at seven.â
âOn a Sunday?â exclaimed Stone.
Karen said, âAlways on a Sunday.â
âWell, at least letâs have luncheon,â said Dr. Stone. âThe chef extends himself for me. He needs a gallstone operation â¦â
They were back in the city, at the Gresham apartment, by six oâclock. Kurt Gresham went immediately to change, the others to freshen. They met again in the drawing room at six-thirty, Gresham in business suit and carrying a brief case. âI should be back by nine or ten.â He kissed his wifeâs cheek. âHave fun.â
When he was gone, Karen Gresham said, âNow weâll narrow it down further. You two have fun. Iâll attend to the servants.â She smiled without prejudice, a sweet smile for the doctor, a sweet smile for the lawyer, and left the room.
âAttend to the servants?â said Dr. Harry Brown. âI donât get it, Tony.â
âDo you have servants, Doctor?â asked Tony Mitchell solemnly.
âNo servants, Counselor.â
âSo you donât get it. Servants need attending to.â
âLike how?â
âLike do you know how many servants there are in this palatial dump?â
âI know thereâs a cook. And thereâs the Filipino houseman.â
âAlso mâladyâs personal maid. Also a chambermaid.â
âWhat attending do they need?â
âQuitting time is seven oâclock.â
âYou mean they donât live in?â
âThey donât live in.â
âBut I know some of them have quarters hereââ
âThey stay over only when thereâs a formal dinner or a late party.â
âThatâs an odd arrangement.â
âKaren prefers it that way. They make her feel uncomfortable, especially when sheâs left alone here with them, as she so often is. Youâve got to remember that Karen wasnât to the manor born. Sheâs only been Karen of Gresh for a couple of years. Sheâs still not used to being married to a fat cat.â
She came back in skintight green slacks and a low-cut green blouse.
She did a pirouette. âLike?â she said.
âWow,â said Tony Mitchell.
âThank you, kind sir.â She turned her smile on Harry. âNo comment, Doctor?â
âI donât have Tonyâs line.â
âWouldnât fit you, kid,â the lawyer grinned. âYouâre the deep-think, stern-type character the women go overboard for. They just ride along with
