able to watch the premiere.
“If you put it that way, we would appreciate it,” Kayla said. “Thank you.”
“That wasn’t so hard, was it?” Alex teased.
“Alex Stone, you’re such a clown,” Kayla scolded jokingly. “You couldn’t sustain a decent conversation.”
He laughed. “Sorry, it’s my defense mechanism.”
Kayla laughed with him
“See you then, Kayla.”
“See you, Alex, and thanks again.”
Kayla found herself smiling as she put down her phone. She was suddenly in a good mood.
Checking the clock to see it was half past eleven, she stepped out of her office to approach Jenny’s desk. Jenny was working on some CAD drawings on her computer.
Kayla was tempted to tell Jenny that they might be watching Alex’s movie premiere night, but decided against it. She wanted to make sure Alex was going to follow through with what he said. He didn’t want to get anyone else’s hopes up
“Wanna have an early lunch?” Kayla invited.
Jenny looked at her, with her mouth hanging open. “Who are you and what did you do to my boss?” she kidded. It was very rare for Kayla to go early for lunch – unless it was a lunch meeting. Most of the time even, Kayla would have a shortened one.
Kayla laughed. “I’m taking baby steps, okay?” She was referring to Jenny’s hope for Kayla to loosen up a bit more. That was one thing Jenny and Alex had in common.
Jenny stood up. “Okay, before you remember that you needed to do something for work, let’s go!”
They laughed as they walked to the elevator lobby.
“Are you up for trying the new banh mi place?” Kayla asked. She remembered seeing it one time she was walking back to the office from a meeting nearby, and noted she would try it out.
“Sure!”
As they walked to the Vietnamese bistro, Jenny was recounting Trey’s latest antics.
“He’s been so observant,” Jenny narrated. “He was looking at Ryan and my wedding photo and was asking why he wasn’t there!”
Kayla laughed. “Awww, Trey’s so cute! Maybe I should offer to be your babysitter when you and Ryan go on date night!” Jenny told her they make it a point to go out on a date one night a week, and left Trey with Jenny’s mom.
“Ha! Your image of Trey would go three-sixty when that happens,” Jenny joked. “He’s a rascal. He might make you end up swearing off having kids by the end of the night.”
Kayla laughed some more. Yes she knew that kids could be quite a handful too. She thought about her niece and nephew, and got sad for a second. She really missed them.
They reached the restaurant to see it was still only half full as it was still a bit early for lunch time. They approached the counter to order. No one else was lining up, so they took their time reviewing the menu posted above.
“I’ll have the chicken,” Jenny announced.
“Go ahead, I haven’t decided yet,” Kayla said. Not that she was a picky eater. In fact she was the opposite. As decisive as she was with everything else, when it came to food she wanted to try them all.
Jenny approached the cashier to place her order and pay, while Kayla held back.
“The shredded pork one is pretty good,” Kayla heard someone say.
She turned to see a man standing next to her on the line. He was tall, had a nice smile and was looking down at her – confirming it was she he had just spoken to.
“I had that last week,” he said shrugging, still smiling. “Good enough to make me want to come back today.”
“Thanks,” Kayla replied, smiling back. “That was actually one of the choices I shortlisted. Might as well try it since you’ve vouched for it.”
“Hope you like it then,” he said.
Kayla approached the cashier to order the shredded pork banh mi and bottled water. After paying, the girl gave her a number and her bottled water, and said the sandwich would be served to their table.
Before heading to their table, she looked back at the guy lined up after her.
“Thanks again,”
