Charlie to step back. âIt looks like he missed you.â
Q ruffled Charlieâs mane. âWell, I donât make it home too often.â He glanced up at her. âYou here for the wedding?â
âWouldnât have missed it for the world.â
âReally? Are you a friend or family of the bride?â
Alyssaâs smile vanished as she blinked at him. He doesnât know who I am. That knowledge, at first, dismayed her, but then slowly her mischievous side took over and her smile returned.
âNo. Actually the groom invited me.â
âAh, Alfred.â Qâs eyes lit up. âHeâs a good man, you know. Heâs been working here a long time. Heâs like family to most of us.â
âYes, he speaks very fondly of the Hintons.â
Quentin cocked his head. âI heard you tell your friend that you wanted to race. Still game?â
âWhatâyou think you can beat me?â
âYouâre not afraid of a challenge, are you?â Excitement crept into his voice. âI donât want to toot my own horn, but Iâm quite an established rider.â
Alyssa snickered at the outrageous lie. Stories of Quentinâs lackluster riding skills were notorious among the staff, but damn if Alyssa could stop herself from wanting to have a little fun. âAll right. Youâre on.â
Q flashed her another smile that caused her heart to race.
âWait right here,â he said. âIâll be right back.â
âYes, sir.â She gave him a faux salute and then watched as he trotted off. Shifting in her saddle, Alyssa took her time to soak in his back profile. Not much had changed over the years. The philandering playboy kept himself in tip-top shape and his effect on her senses was just as strong as it had ever been. Had she really seen lust in his eyes or had she imagined the whole thing? After so many years of hoping and praying for such a miracle, she didnât quite trust her read on the situation.
Donât get your hopes up too high. As soon as he learns who you are that look in his eyes is going to quickly turn into disappointment. Alyssa weighed that information for a moment before her mischievous side spoke up. But until he finds out, thereâs no reason why you canât have a little fun.
Minutes later, Quentin emerged from the stables with Midnight, a gorgeous black stallion that was clearly a superior horse to playful Charlie, but given that Q was going to be the rider, she still liked her chances of winning a raceâprovided he managed to remain topside.
âBeautiful, isnât he?â Q asked, fishing for a compliment for his choice.
âHeâs definitely that,â she admitted. âIâm almost tempted to change my mind.â Quentinâs beautiful smile exploded across his face, causing Alyssaâs Jell-O belly to quiver once again.
âI promise Iâll take it a little easy on you.â
âAre you suggesting that youâll throw the race?â she asked. âThat kind of defeats the purpose, doesnât it?â
âIâm just trying to be gentlemanly. Say, I give you a ten-second head start?â
Alyssa shook her head. âThatâs all right. Iâd rather win fair and square or not at all.â Quentinâs laugh boomed and cloaked Alyssa like a warm blanket. She discreetly pinched her hand to make sure that she wasnât dreaming.
âYou know what? I think I like you, Msâ¦?â He cocked his head. âI donât believe I caught your name.â
âThatâs because I havenât given it to you yet,â she answered with a teasing smile.
âAh.â Q nodded his approval. âPlaying the mysterious card, eh? You know Iâll find out sooner or later.â
That was what she was afraid of. âI tell you what.
Weâll race to the estateâs entrance and back. If you win Iâll tell you my
