very shrewd, very successful businessman. Not only that – he specialized
in obtaining capital for new and growing firms and helped them acquire management expertise.
True, he worked with large-scale enterprises, not small businesses, but Reyna knew she would find
herself paying attention to his opinions on her financial plans.
But instead of commenting on the business aspects of the project, Trev said gruffly, “Going into business
here isn’t quite the same as working the front desk of that condo, Reyna. You’ll be committing yourself.“
She shook her head in exasperation. “I keep trying to get it through your head that I already am
committed to my new life.“
He looked at her and she winced inwardly as she saw the undeniable glint of challenge in his eyes.
“Then I'll just have to work very hard at changing your mind, won’t I?“
“This conversation is heading for a dead end,“ she said sadly.
His expression tightened and she waited, wondering if he was going to lose his temper. It occurred to
Reyna that she’d never had occasion to see Trev in a fury. The amber eyes narrowed slightly.
“Why are you looking so expectant?“ he asked cautiously.
“I thought you might be on the edge of losing your patience,“ she murmured impishly.
“The prospect intrigues you?“
“I’ve never seen you in a flaming temper. You’re always so cool and collected.“
“Stick around, you may have a treat in store,“ he muttered. “But not tonight“
“No?“
“Tonight I’m intent on seduction,“ he explained in a matter-of-fact tone of voice.
Reyna felt the prickle of a warning chill This man had a habit of achieving his objectives. She banished
the uneasy sensation almost immediately, reminding herself that here they were on her turf.
“I never thought you were the type to waste time on a useless project,“ she murmured, her index finger
tracing the rim of her glass.
“Look,“ he interrupted with sudden tension, “could we skip the flashy repartee? I don’t particularly want
to trade a lot of cutting banter with you this evening. I just want you. Period.“
The abrupt and deliberate confrontation shook her.
“It would never work a second time, Trev.“ Reyna attempted a weak smile. “It’s like a merger attempt
You have to strike while the iron is hot Once everything’s cooled down, there’s no going back.“
“How can you be so certain? Reyna, I want a second chance. I’ll take care of your love this time.“
“It doesn’t exist anymore, Trev,“ she whispered. It was true, wasn’t it? She’d left her love for him
behind when she’d left her old life behind.
“It exists,“ he stated roughly. “You’ve buried it as a way of dealing with the pain of rejection. But I’m
betting everything on the belief that deep down you couldn’t have fallen out of love with me in six months.“
“Why do you want that love now?“ Reyna asked gently. It was becoming obvious that although he
talked a lot about regaining her love, he hadn’t said anything about being in love with her. What was driving
him? Sheer desire or a mixture of desire and guilt?
“There’s been no one else for six months, Reyna – “
“That’s hardly my fault!“ she managed flippantly, not caring for the urgency in him.
“I’ve spent more nights than I want to remember trying to tell myself that all I needed was another
woman, but it didn’t work,“ he plowed on. “I want to be loved. I’ve had a taste of the real thing and now I’
m addicted. I know I’ve got a job ahead of me convincing you to come back to me but I’m going to do it!“
The blazing intensity in his gaze belied the outward calm of his voice. Reyna realized as she met that
molten amber glance that something was happening to her nervous system. Her breath felt shallow and a
little tight and there was a tingling awareness throughout her body. She’d experienced those sensations
before around Trev and she knew
