âItâs justâ¦â She struggled for the right words and then just ended with, âI donât hate you.â
âThatâs good to hear.â He shrugged his big shoulders. âEven though I donât quite believe it.â
Sofia squirmed in her chair.
âI guess it doesnât matter,â he said, but then thought about it. âBut it would be nice if we could somehow figure out a way to have some kind of cordial relationship since we are going to be working together.â
She sucked in a deep breath.
âAnd yes, itâs still duly noted that youâre against the merger. But thatâs already behind us. Moving forward I think the best thing we can do for our employees is to show a united front. I know thatâs what your uncle and I both want.â
Silence.
âOr not,â he amended, feeling his frustrations re turning. âItâs up to you. We can pit the Limelight employees against the A.F.I. employees and see how far that gets us. But Iâm willing to bet not far.â
Sofia took another deep breath and then said, âIâm being stubborn, arenât I?â
âThatâsâ¦one word I wouldâve used.â He smiled. âIf I was going to keep it PG.â
That won a second smile from her. Still she was conflicted about letting go of a grudge sheâd held for so long against the Jordans. âHow about we strike a deal?â
Ram laughed. âItâs always about the deal with you, isnât it?â
âWhat can I say? Negotiating is in my blood.â
He nodded. âAll right. What kind of deal are we talking about?â
âMy client list,â she said, crossing her arms. âNo dividing it up. My people are my people.â
Ram threw his head back and laughed. âNow why didnât I see that coming?â
âI donât know. Maybe you had mistaken me for someone who gives up.â
âNever that, baby girl. Never that.â He shook his head.
âWell?â
He tugged in a breath. âThe point in me taking the list was to lighten your workload.â
âDo you want to end the stalemate or donât you?â
His eyes narrowed. âI do, butââ
âGood. You want something and I want something. Letâs negotiate.â
Boxed into a corner, Ram considered his options. The fact that this is the longest conversation theyâve had without her storming off or tossing in a few choice words his way forced him to recognize the sweet carrot she was offering. âYour list for peace?â
âThatâs pretty much it in a nutshell.â
âBut thereâs still the issue of you working too many long hours,â he said, hedging. âI admit that youâre one hell of an agent and a great asset to the company, but letâs face it. You canât sustain this workload. You need help and youâre too stubborn to admit it or acknowledge it.â
Sofiaâs jaw clenched. âFine. Iâll cut back on my hours.â
âTo forty hours a week.â
âWhat? Donât be ridiculous. I can doâ¦seventy.â
âLower.â
âSixty-five.â
âLower.â
âSixty?â
âLower.â
âOh. I give up. Youâre totally being unreasonable.â She shifted in her seat in an attempt to give him her back.
Ram was too busy laughing.
âWhatâs so funny now?â
âYou are,â he said. âI recall us almost having the same exact conversation when you were telling me that you wanted to date a gazillion boys.â
âWhat?â And then the memory hit her. âOh.â Her face warmed as she blushed. âYou remember that?â
His smile returned. âWell I had asked you to marry me for like the millionth time.â
âYou were persistent. Iâll give you that.â
âAll the good that did me,â he mumbled under his breath. âI believe
