    “That’s very nice, sweetheart, but Mommy and Daddy are talking right now. Nanny Doreen is waiting for you out by the car, she’s going take you to school this morning.” She shoved me out of the front door, the door closed with a loud thud and I could hear Mommy starting to yell at Daddy again.
    Mommy and Daddy were always fighting. Daddy kept getting in trouble with some lady from his office. I wish Daddy would stop being bad. I don’t like it when Mommy and Daddy fight.
    Charlie, our driver, opened the car door for me and I jumped into the backseat. “Buckle your seatbelt, Miss Nadine.” He smiled at me and closed the door.
    The car pulled out of our long driveway and I watched excitedly out the window while Nanny Doreen told me to be a good girl and to listen to my teacher. I could feel my heart beating fast when we arrived at my new school. There were kids everywhere. I hoped they would like me. Mommy said I was a little monster. I didn’t know why she said that I didn’t look like the monsters in my books.
    Nanny Doreen walked me to my classroom. She knelt down in front of me and smoothed out my dress and fixed my hair. “Okay, Miss Nadine, you’re all ready for your first day. Now you be your sweet little self, and everyone is going to love you. Have fun today, and I’ll meet you out front after school and we’ll go get ice cream.” She kissed my forehead and watched as I stepped inside the classroom.
    I walked down the rows of desks looking for my name. I finally found my desk right next to another little girl in a pink dress. She looked up at me with a big smile. “Hi, I’m Lucy.”
