right about the fighting as well. Jack had different colored bruises on his face, arms, and hands that made him look more rugged than raggedy in her opinion.

“Why should I, Jack? After this long period of time and your treatment of me… why should I give two shits about what you have to say?” This was harder than she thought it’d be, and where was the fucking elevator?

“You shouldn’t give two shits, but I’d like to tell you anyway.” Jack was calm… always calm. Maybe that was the problem. She was full of piss, vinegar, and passion, and he really couldn’t have cared less. It made her mad that he was trying to say that he’d been thinking about her when he just happened to see her at the hospital. He didn’t know she was going to be there because he looked as surprised as she felt when those elevator doors opened.

She looked up into his face, and she shouldn’t have. Those everything eyes he had with the brown, blue, yellow and green in strategic spots pleaded for forgiveness. Could she say no? She could but she didn’t want to. Fuck, damn, and shit.

“I may have a little time tonight when I get off work, but I don’t want to meet at my apartment.” She was such a wuss. It was the eyes that made her give in, and she had to find a way to get through the meeting they were supposed to have, if he even showed up. Jack hadn’t ever been a game player that she knew of, but she wondered about everything that came out of his mouth now.

“You know as well as I do that we can’t be seen together. I won’t put you in danger again. If you want to see me and you don’t want it to be in your apartment, we’ll have to wait until I can find a good spot.” He was looking around even as the words left his mouth, and although that should have made her feel protected, it only made her feel pissed. She wanted him to buck the system and figure out a way for them to be together… come hell or high water, but she just didn’t inspire that kind of commitment or fanfare she guessed. He was more in the “let’s just stay in and hide from everyone” train of thought, but she was way over that.

“Fuck,” she said startling him and the people walking by them. “Fine, come to my apartment at 7pm, and you better be talking when I open the door. You have one hour.”

    Ding.

Finally the dumb ass elevator doors opened up, and Natalie stepped on without confirming whether Jack would be at her house this evening or not. She’d get ready, but if he didn’t come, she wouldn’t be that upset. Natalie was still disappointed with herself about how happy she was to see him. The fucker. She shouldn’t have been so agreeable, but when he said he had to work something out with her and he wanted it to be in her apartment or they’d have to wait, she suddenly wanted to know what he was going to say. She could have kicked herself for being such a nosy bitch, but it was what it was, and she wanted to know what was going on with him. She’d hurry to get home so she could use her vibrator before he got there or all of her bravado would be gone as fast as she’d have dropped her panties to be fucked. She was so lame.

    CHAPTER SEVEN

Jack was a decisive man who didn’t like to take anything from anyone and always did what he thought was best for people he cared for, but looking at Natalie’s shocked face when she saw him in the elevator had taken his breath away. It seemed like he’d not really been living in the months they’d been apart. The frustration that came from her was something he’d never seen before, but he knew more than anyone else that grief and anger can change a person.

He was at Natalie’s door right on time, but it didn’t seem like anyone was home. Jack wondered if she planned on trying to punish him by not being there. If that was the case, he would wait. After a few more knocks, he could hear her coming to the door and was relieved that
