dim light from the bathroom, I could see hand marks on her neck. “Come on, kibbutz with me. What’s the fun of fucking billionaires if we can’t gossip afterwards?”

    “He…he likes…to put a collar on me,” I said.

“Yeah,” she said, her eyes going up and down my body. She brushed the hair from my neck, moving my chin aside.

    “Hey,” I said, protesting softly.

“What else?” she said, her eyes meeting mine. Like glittering sapphires, beautiful and cold.

“And then he put a leash on me,” I said, whispering.

“What else?” she said, her fingers brushing the hair from my cheek. She leaned in close and smelled my neck.

“Then he…” I turned my head, my lips brushing against her cheek. “He fucked me,” I said.

“What else?” she said, turning to face me, our lips so close.

“That’s it,” I said, closing my eyes. I leaned forward. My lips met nothing. I opened my eyes.

“That’s it?” Maggie said, arms folded and standing a foot back. “Some light BDSM stuff? You are so boring.”

    “That’s boring?” I said, incredulous.

“I bet your grandparents do light BDSM after they’re done feeding the cows or whatever. I thought you had something good,” she said. “Like maybe he was into tuning or inflation or something German.”

“Wait, what?” I said. “I’m sorry I shared what I did. You’re obviously on a whole different level of…whatever this is. Mr. Stannis and I have something special.”

“Well, this weekend we’ll see,” she said, stepping into the bathroom. She made to close the door behind her, but I stopped it.

    “This weekend?” I said.

“Yeah, at the…”she said. “Oh, never mind.” She pulled the door shut and I heard the shower go on.

    —

“You’re out to destroy me,” Denise said casually.

I looked to Maggie, who had her mouth glued shut. I checked my watch. We weren’t late, but it was close. We’d speed walked from the elevator, and I was trying to keep my panting quiet.

“Do you know how much pressure I’m under right now?” she said, looking at me. “Do you have even the tiniest clue?” She shifted her gaze to Maggie.

    “Ms. Fingle, wha-“ I started.

Her finger shot up. “Don’t say anything. Your voices are like chirps and buzzes from some terrible nightmare. Just,” she said, “don’t speak.”

I clamped my mouth shut. I felt my palms getting damp. I thought I was getting used to Denise’s peculiar management style, but this was befuddling.

Denise walked from behind her desk and circled us, like a pack of lions circling the gazelle. “Tonight is very important. It’s this Hotel’s birthday. One hundred years. Can you even conceive what that means?”

Her fingers went up and caught a small length of hair that had escaped my ponytail. “This is unacceptable. This lack of attention to detail will not suffice this weekend.” She switched her attention to Maggie.

I quickly re-bundled my hair into the ponytail, pulling it tight and double checking that no hairs were astray. I saw Denise grab a tiny part of Maggie's shirt that wasn’t tucked in.

“I can’t believe I put any faith in you two. I see I’ve been too relaxed, and in turn you’ve gotten lazy.” She released Maggie's shirt, and Maggie quickly tucked it back into her pants and straightened it out.

“This weekend will not be ruined by two incompetent nincompoops like you. No fucking way,” she said, her voice growing quiet. “Do you understand me?”

I opened my mouth to speak but instead nodded. I saw Maggie do the same.

“Good,” Denise said, her face changing instantly. Her bright smile took us both in. “I would like both of you to be on your best behavior. Our party guests will be arriving soon. Please make sure they feel welcome.”

    “Yes Ms. Fingle,” I said.

    “Yes Ms. Fingle,” Maggie said.

“A town car is waiting outside for you, Tina. You’ve got a special assignment for the day,” Denise
