join him behind the glass.
“She’s asleep, we can speak freely,” Nash said to him.
The commander stood stoically with his hands behind his back, his black gloves once again on and in full uniform. “What do you see doctor?” He asked through the communicator.
The older man shook his head, his divided tongue flipping out of his mouth occasionally as he was testing the air. “It’s not good Sir. It seems they placed the microchip underneath her breastbone, just next to her heart, see there?” He said as he pointed to the monitor. You could just barely make out the tiniest of black specks among all of the red blood and tissue. “I’m going have to do some further examinations, but as of now I don’t see how we could get it out. I have to ask what is so important about it?”
The commander shook his head. “We think it has something to do with the plague. Perhaps what caused it, we’re hoping for more information.”
The doctor raised an eyebrow. “The plague? We have a vaccine now. Besides the plague happened nearly a human decade ago, when this girl was just a child. Most of the strains have died out at this point, it’s no longer a threat, commander. I’m not sure it’s worth doing the operation on her to retrieve it.”
Nash watched her body, her shallow breathing made him uncomfortable. He couldn’t imagine what it would be like to watch her go through surgery, especially one that the doctor didn’t seem to agree with. He knew it wasn’t safe.
“We may have to do another recon mission. Figure out exactly if what’s on the microchip is worth this woman’s life. But as of right now we treat her as its carrier. Keep her happy and comfortable until we can move forward with a constructive plan.”
Nash was so focused on the lines of her body. His eyes flickered over full lips, and he traced the outline of her skin.
“Lieutenant? Did you get all that?”
Nash shook his head and then stood tall at attention. “Keep her comfortable and safe, yes Sir!” He saluted the commander and then watched him return the salute before exiting the medical bay. After he was gone Nash turned towards the doctor to get the full picture.
“Do you really think that could be any information on the microchip about the plague that we don’t know?”
The older man shrugged, his light blue lab coat rippling as he moved. “I doubt it. But this isn’t my ship, it’s the commander’s call ultimately. But I can’t say I’m very confident that the operation wouldn’t kill her. But as long as she has a chip inside her someone is always going to want it. Whether it’s the Alliance, or the Pirates. At least for now the Trekkers have her, for her that’s a plus.”
Nash went through the glass door and stood by her unconscious body. He ached to reach out and hold her hand.
“You can touch her son. She won’t remember it. And I won’t tell. She’ll wake up in a short while. I plan on leaving the scan on, but turning off the lights and letting her relax. You’re welcome to stay with her.”
Nash nodded to the doctor as the older man pressed something on his handheld screen and the lights became dim. He walked through the exterior doors and the glass shut behind him.
Nash struggled with the decision whether to hold her hand or not. He was stepping over the line, but he couldn’t help himself. He wrapped his massive hands around her own delicate one and interlaced their fingers. He felt a surge of electricity flow through them and go straight to his half human heart.
He couldn’t deny it anymore, they were truly mates. And now he would have to disobey orders for the first time in his life, he wouldn’t let the commander perform the surgery. Not until they had more answers.
He would do anything to keep her safe.

Ellora
W hat literally felt like hours had passed by the time Ellora opened her eyes.
“That was the best sleep I think I have ever had,” she said looking at Nash. “Did you stay
