extraordinary. But they should spend their money on something more productive.â
âBalloons? Teddy bears?â
âWhatâs wrong with you? From what Jock told me, this isnât the time for levity.â
âI agree.â She made a face. âI think Iâm a little light-headed.â
âAre you?â MacDuff gazed at her searchingly. âJock said that you almost succeeded in getting Cara back before Natalie Castino managed to escape with her. It must have been quite a brouhaha. I would have liked to have been there. But you look as if it drained you.â
âAlmost is the key word.â She shook her head. âAnd may I remind you that we were wondering if youâd even survive, MacDuff. How are you?â
âTired of this hospital and flowers and wanting to get back in control of my life.â His eyes were still narrowed on her. âHow are you? Any news of Cara?â
âNot yet. We think sheâs on her way to Moscow.â She paused. âBut I will hear from Natalie. She as much as told me that she wanted to strike a bargain for Ciraâs gold.â
âReally? A little premature, isnât she? We havenât found it yet.â
âShe believes we will. She thinks itâs her destiny to have it.â
âSheâs wrong. Itâs my destiny, Eve.â He smiled. âMy ancestor. My family. My gold.â
âI know that, MacDuff. Thatâs why Iâm here,â she said wearily. âI need your help. Iâm not asking you to do anything that would jeopardize your opportunity to find and keep that chest of coins. I just want you to play the game for a little while.â
âAnd that involves?â
âContinuing to search for Ciraâs gold, perhaps pretending to find it.â She hesitated. âIf you do find it, be willing to offer to trade it for Cara. Offer, not actually go through with it.â
He was silent. âIf Natalie is as clever as you think, that might be a risk. I could lose what Iâve been searching for since I was a boy.â
âYou wonât lose it. Joe and I wonât let you. That would be more dangerous for Cara.â
He nodded. âI can see that.â He suddenly smiled. âBut perhaps Jock and I could improvise a little. It would be far more satisfactory to let her have it, then take it back. It would soothe my broken bones and damaged pride.â
âYou may not have Jock. Thatâs another thing I wanted to discuss. Heâs leaving for Moscow, and Iâm trying to keep him from getting himself and Cara killed before we put plans in motion. Heâs promised to give me a little time, but I donât know how long that will turn out to be.â
âI donât either,â MacDuff said soberly. âThe child means something to him. Jock has a great heart, but heâs very guarded these days. Cara managed to slip under his defenses.â
She had slipped under all their defenses, Eve thought. Full of wistfulness and warmth and music, Cara had quietly moved in and become part of them. At first, she and Joe had thought they were only being kind and helping her. She wasnât sure at what point she had realized that kindness had become love.
âYou, too?â MacDuff said, his gaze on her face. âThen weâd better do something about it, hadnât we?â He straightened in the bed. âAnd I canât do anything in this damn hospital. Is Jock still here?â
âYes, not for long.â
âIt will be long enough. Send him in, and Iâll tell him to get me out of here.â
âThe hospital staff may not listen to him. Youâre an influential man, and they wonât want to take chances.â
âJock will take care of it.â He added wryly, âIn case you havenât noticed, Jock is a combination of sheer charisma and lethal determination. If one doesnât work, the other will. Iâll be
