on the desk, untouched. She glanced back at her computer screen and sighed. No flights available for Boston on her small airline and not much she could find for a swap of favors of any sort. It was going to be an expensive booking, first class, for her to get Travis to Boston in time to salvage some of his reunion. If he came back to collect his ride at all. She’d already given him one, after all.
Her mouth twisted at the thought.
“Helloooo. Earth to Alicia. We have our first flight to Dallas today, remember? Y’all?” she drawled as she sat in the loveseat along the wall of the office and stared at Alicia.
“Of course.” Alicia tapped the keys and pulled up her company schedule. This really was a big step for the company, and the new route meant she’d begun to play with the big boys in private travel. But the success lacked the…flavor it once had.
“C’mon, sweetie, now that you’re back in the saddle again, we can have some fun with those Texan tall, cool dranks of water.” Selene’s fake twang broke into her thoughts and she saluted her with her coffee.
Alicia had to laugh. Selene would never worry about what might have been. “You have the worst Texas accent I’ve ever heard.”
“Maybe, but at least I’m having fun. You look pretty miserable for a girl who had some hot rodeo lovin’ last night.”
“Not that it’s any of your business, but it was damn hot rodeo lovin’. It’s just that he wasn’t there when I woke up.”
Selene raised an eyebrow. “So? You had your fun—twice now, as a matter of fact. What more do you want?”
“I guess that’s the real question, isn’t it?” Alicia glanced back at the computer screen. With a flick she toggled back to the ticket search she’d set up for Travis’s flight. “I promised him I’d get him to Boston today so he could meet up with his pals.”
“But we don’t have any flights going to Boston today.” Selene got up and walked over to the desk to glance at the computer display. “Ouch. First Class?”
“Well, I promised. And there isn’t anything else available.” In a decisive move, she clicked the purchase button.
Selene laid one hand on Alicia’s shoulder. “As your business partner I’m glad to be reminded once again about your integrity.” She spun Alicia around to look her in the face. “But as your girlfriend I have to say, what the hell is wrong with you? He isn’t even here. What, did he use some kind of voodoo on you?”
Alicia stood. “I’m getting dressed. I’ll see you this afternoon for the Texas take-off.”
“Okay, sweetie. Your pocketbook took a hit, but you’re even now. Just don’t get your heart in trouble, okay?” Selene gave her a quick hug and then turned to toss her empty coffee cup into the trash. “See you later.”
Alicia watched her friend leave. Selene was right. This was ridiculous. She picked up her coffee and headed up the stairs to get dressed. Yes, Travis made her feel things she hadn’t felt in a while—excitement, desire and a focused sexuality that took her breath away. Now she was settling the score, ending the game. He’d leave for his trip, have some fun and go back to his old life. If he did want to see her again, it would only be for a booty call, one he’d believe she would answer, considering how she’d jumped at his sexual beck and call. She’d take him up on it, of course, and enjoy another night of mind-blowing sex. But nothing would really change.
The thought was, somehow, a little depressing.
Alicia walked to her closet and took out a suit in a dark grey pinstripe. Coupled with an aqua blouse, it was one of her favorite power suits. Understated, yet radiating strength and stability. Straightening her shoulders, she made a decision. It was nearly eleven now, and Travis hadn’t returned. He wasn’t going to. She had to accept that, move on. No more one-nighters. Or even two-nighters.
She needed the solid life she’d been building for herself since her
