teased, but Rock could feel her cheeks burning. All the boys in the scene laughed and pointed at her. She was happy to be the only girl in the soldier corpsâshe liked to be the center of attentionâbut not when she made a stupid, clumsy mistake.
âThese prop rifles are probably heavier than the broomsticks weâve been using in practice,âMarcus instructed them. âHandle them with care.â He cued the sound crew, and the battle scene music swelled. The group marched in perfect unison around the stage.
âHigher, higher,â he said, correcting Rochelle as she struggled to keep the rifle suspended above her head.
When they finished, she was panting. âThat thing must weigh at least fifty pounds!â
Hayden held the rifle in one hand as if it were light as a feather. âIâd say about six pounds. You just have weak muscles.â
Rochelle raised an eyebrow. âAre you calling me a wimp?â
Hayden chuckled. âRock, take it easy! Iâm kidding around. Iâm just saying you are the only girl whoâs playing a soldier and maybe itâs a little tough for you â¦â
Rochelle crossed her arms over her chest. âBecause Iâm a girl and I canât cut it?â she challenged him. âIs that what you think?â
Hayden shrugged. He didnât know what elseto say. Clearly, he had put his foot in his mouth. âMaybe you just need a lighter rifle?â
Rochelle shoved the prop at Hayden and marched off to her friends in a huff.
Hayden handed both back to Marcus. âI donât get it. Did I say something wrong?â
âI am not one to give advice in the love department,â the director insisted. âWhen I was your age, I had a knack for saying and doing everything wrong.â
Hayden suspected he was talking about his breakup with Miss Toni when they were teenagers at American Ballet Company. Rochelle and Scarlett had filled him in on everything.
âWhat I will tell you is this,â Marcus continued. âYou want to patch things up before they get in the way of the ballet. And thatâs not a suggestion. Itâs an order.â
Hayden looked over at Rochelle. He swore he saw steam coming out of her ears. âSheâs really mad at me. How do I patch things up when she wonât even speak to me?â
Marcus demonstrated a graceful
saut de basque
into a bended knee on the stage.
âOkay, I get it,â Hayden said. âBeg.â
He went over to Rochelle and did the same dance move. He kneeled at Rockâs feet and took her hand and kissed it.
âGet up,â Rochelle said, tugging on his arm. âThis is embarrassing.â
âIâm sorry,â Hayden apologized. âPlease forgive me.â
âAww,â Bria said, sighing. âThis is so romantic!â
But Rochelle wasnât buying it. âI challenge you to a duel
en pointe
,â she told Hayden.
âA what?â he asked, scratching his head.
âYou think youâre such a big, strong guy. Try walking in my shoes for five minutes!â
She handed him a toe pad and one of her pointe shoes. âYou stand on your toes and Iâll stand on mine, and weâll see who lasts the longest.â She strapped on her left shoe and waited for Hayden to put on his.
âRock, this is ridiculous. I donât wear toe shoes.â
âWhatâs the matter? Too hard for you?â Rochelle taunted him.
âThey wonât even fit me.â Hayden tried to wiggle his way out of it.
âTry mine,â Anya offered. âIâm a size nine wide. I have huge feet like my dad.â
Hayden slipped his toes into Anyaâs shoe and laced the ribbon up his ankle.
âThis is so silly,â he said, limping over to Rochelle. âWhat is this supposed to prove?â
âThat everyone has his or her own strengths and weaknesses,â she said. She put on the right shoe and went up
