on me.â She genuinely appreciated his call. Without a reminder, sheâd be in the same grubby jeans and baggy sweater sheâd worn since she got here.
His voice dry, Brody said, âIan pays me in brotherly love.â
She had to laugh. âDoes that go for your carpentry work, too?â
âIt covers everything. See you soon.â And he disconnected.
When she walked into the dining room at twelve thirty, Brody looked at her, surprised. She smirked. Her hair waved past her shoulders, shiny and clean. She wore black jeans and a black, fitted, long-sleeved tee with the words I put a spell on you across her breasts. Sheâd put on mascara, blush, lipstickâthe works.
âWell, who knew?â Brody smiled up at her.
She grinned. âYou didnât think Iâd get my shit together, did you?â
Paula had made chicken salad sandwiches for lunch today, and Brody dug into them.
Ian shook his head. âThose are one of his favorites.â
The man had good taste. She followed suit. Half a sandwich down, she wiped sauce off her mouth. âTheyâre really good.â She turned to Ian. âHowâs Tessa? Better today?â
âStill moving slow. We made a simple meal for tonight. I helped her slap rub on baby back ribs and put them in the oven on low. Iâll add sauce when I get home and throw in some potatoes, then crank up the heat.â
Brody looked concerned. âShe doesnât have to cook for us every night. We can manage on our own.â
âNo, she wants to,â Ian said. âSheâs looked forward to seeing you guys since you agreed to come. Sheâs going to cut back a little on her writing so she can enjoy you.â
âBut she only writes in the winter. She runs the farm stand in the summer.â Harmony nodded to Brody for support. âIf you donât mind eating a little later, Brody and I could drive over at six and help with the cooking.â
Brody stared at her, surprised. âDo you cook? I mean, something people can eat?â
Offended, Harmony raised her chin. âIâm not an expert like Tessa, but when I have friends over, I have a dozen tested recipes I can count on. Theyâve never complained. No oneâs gone to the hospital.â
Brody winced, and she studied him. Had she hit a nerve? Good, he deserved it. âI canât cook,â he said, âbut Iâd be happy to help out.â
Ian waved away their offers. âI can help Tessa, too, but sheâll fuss about it. For right now, sheâs just tired, so I can fill in.â
Paula chimed in. âI could make dinners for Brody to take over.â
Ian sighed. âThanks, guys. Really. But itâs your two-week vacation, Paula. Youâre not cooking. If worse comes to worst, weâll drive into town and eat at the diner.â
âThat works for me.â Harmony finished her sandwich. âI came here to visit with Tessa, not to make her entertain me.â
Brody nodded, but Ian shook his head. âTessaâs not ready for any of that yet. Youâll lose this battle.â
âShe is a redhead,â Brody said. âWeâll try again later.â
On the way back to her room, Harmony fretted. She didnât want to wear Tessa out. She knew her friend. Sheâd try to be the perfect hostess, and she didnât have to. But try telling her that.
Chapter 7
B rody, Aiden, and Bailey knocked on her door at four oâclock. Brody tried to corral the kids so that they didnât rush her, but with no luck. After hugs and rushed greetings, they settled in for the movieâAiden on his stomach on her bedâsheâd made it since Brody was comingâand Bailey on Brodyâs lap.
Harmony glanced at gauze wrapped and taped around Brodyâs thumb. âCut yourself?â
Brody scowled. âIan hired Luther for afternoon help. The kidâs a fast learner, but his first swing with a hammer
