and I gotta run!â
âStay right where you are!â barked Athena. âYou two are not going up to the roof. Dionysus, Bacchus, give Minerva and me their clothes and girdles right now;
we
will take them up as soon as I finish seasoning this dish. Honestly, the nerve!â
âI wouldnât blame them if they turned you two into drunken raccoons after you stole their things,â Minerva agreed, taking the goddessesâ clothing, placing it on a chair, and turning back to the cooking pot. âNow, Sister, which wine to use? Diluted or undiluted?â
âI say undiluted,â Athena said, turning to the storage shelves and reaching for the bottle. âWhereâs the wine?â
âI hear someone calling,â Bacchus said, tearing out of the room. âDonât you, Brother?â
âHuh?â said Dionysus. âOh! Oh, yes! Coming, Zeus!â
âTheyâve stolen the wine!â Minerva cried.
âIâm going to turn them into raccoons myself. Father
isnât
calling you, you overgrown Satyr!â Athena said, tossing her wooden spoon onto the counter. âNow give me that wine!â
Both gods fled on their goat hooves to the upper levels of the insula as Athena and Minerva tore after them, trying in vain to grab the wine bottles from their hands.
Hermes and Mercury tiptoed over to the cooking pot and Mercury was about to lift the lid.
âDonât touch that!â yelled Minerva from the stairwell.
Mercury yanked his arm back.
âHow do they always know?â he whispered.
Just then, there was a shriek from the stairwell and Aphrodite and Venus ran into the food-preparation area, completely unclothed with only their long, golden hair covering everything that needed it, followed by Bacchus and Dionysus.
âDo you have our clothes?!â Venus shouted.
âGosh,â said Hermes, all innocence. âThey were around here somewhere.â
âThere!â shouted Venus, pointing to the chair.
âWe just want to say weâre sorry!â pleaded Dionysus, he and Bacchus racing after the goddesses as they dashed away, hurriedly flinging on their garments.
âHow about a hug?â called Bacchus.
There was a long moment of silence as Mercury and Hermes just stared at the spot where Venus and Aphrodite had been only moments before.
âI think that may have been worth the entire trip,â Hermes said, slowly.
âEven if Pandora doesnât succeed,â agreed Mercury, still rapt.
âPandora? Whatâs a Pandora?â
Athena and Minerva bolted back into the kitchen. Hermes and Mercury simultaneously pointed in the direction everyone had run off.
âHow did they get
by
us?â Athena said, sprinting with Minerva close behind.
Suddenly there were two loud thuds.
âOW!â
âSorry,â Hermes heard Minervaâor was it Athenaâsay. âWeâre after the wine.â
Diana and Artemis stumbled into the kitchen, each one rubbing her shoulder.
âEveryone has completely lost their minds!â Artemis said. âTheyâre running around like a spooked herd of sacred cows!â
âZeus and Dad are getting ticked off. They want to leave already. Now,
we
are ready to go,â said Diana to Mercury. âYou?â
âReady,â said Mercury.
â
Stop sneaking up on me!
â Juno screamed from an upper floor.
âItâs like sheâs here in the room,â Artemis said quietly.
âItâs a voice that carries, certainly,â agreed Hermes, flicking a piece of lint off his toga.
â
And stop shooting arrows at me, you little gorgons!
â they all heard Juno shout.
âCupid and Eros still trying to make her fall in love with the furniture?â asked Diana.
â
I will take those arrows and give you both such a â¦
â
âLooks that way,â said Mercury.
